I don't know how big or expensive that first one is, but I can see alot of people cutting off the whole hand to put on other mins. 
EDIT: As someone else, Valdric, mentioned at Zlurpeebowl.com, the head with the hockey mask is very useful also.

I don't know for sure but I think that is a 25mm base he is on. That would make him average human size, I believe.
