Okay, I found some sculpey while I was cleaning and whipped this up...
I know the lighting is bad, I just took a snapshot while it was on my table. I didn't light it or even adjust the camera...shame on me.
Gonna add some green stuff eye stalks (9?) and some helmet spikes.
I also want to add some spiky teeth to the mouth (at least some you can see because there are actually teeth in there.)
"Just whipped this up" After seeing what you can just whip up makes me want to put away my procreate before I embarass myself.
Looks very good, needs 10 eyestalks. Are you thinking of having them come out through small holes in the helmet? The sharp pointy teeth will really help the look, right now it sort of looks like he's gumming it, like a babies pacifier. At least that's my first impression, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Yeah they will poke out through holes in the helmet...well "holes" I won't actually cut holes but yeah.
Although I thought beholders had 9 eye stalks and the 10th anti-magic cone came from the big frontal eye? You're gonna make me get out my monster manual aren't you?
At any rate Beholders are the IP of Wizards of the Coast so this will be an Eye Lord, or an "Ock Jock"
However I didn't say anything to my wife and her comment was "honey that's obsene ... why does he have a penis coming out of his mouth"
I informed her it was a football ... and she just shook her head and walked away.
The football in the mouth I have to admit doesn't quite do it for me. However ... I do really like the idea of us casting an Eye Lord in a football helmet. Sounds fun.
If you are doing this for yourself ... its very very cool ... go for it man!!!!
If you wee thinking about it for Targeted ... I'm try for the mean zap'em style without the ball but with the helmet.
=====
So to be clear ... that's AWESOME work for an beginning sculpt. So you have my compliments!!!
Anyway, I think it's the picture. I was actually pretty proud of the football, but looking at the pics through your wife's eyes it does look strange. Maybe it's the color? I don't know but I'm pretty sure once it's painted brown with a white stripe there won't be any questions.
Um, I hadn't really thought about WHY I was doing it...just that the idea made me laugh and I found some sculpey when I was cleaning up.
I have no experience with mini sculpting beyond using a little greenstuff for conversions. I have worked with clay sculpture quite a bit in the past and I think I'm pretty good, but that was on a larger scale and only nudes from life, no clothing.
I have wanted to start sculpting for some time but haven't had the time. Once I get myself employed I plan on buying the Reaper sculpting skeletons and giving it a go. For now this is probably just to amuse myself.
But if enough people like it maybe I'll make one for Targeted Impact.
If I were to make some stuff for Targeted:
1. How do I get a mold made?
2. What is "Zap'em" style?
3. Is sculpey okay or do I need to stick to green and brown stuff?
4. What if I wanted the stalks to be seperate pieces? Do I need to consider that for the molding process?
5. Is there a link that answers these questions that I am too lazy to look for?
Heh thanks...but them helmet isn't mine. It's copped from a gum ball machine NFL helmet. Kansas City Chiefs...the red matches the coral colored sculpey.
So anyone who wants to take back their compliments, I don't mind.
Wouldn't a Beholder (even if called a Eye Lord) be breaking D&D IP? _________________ What the hell am I doing on a mini's forum? I DON'T PAINT!!!
Nor do I

Nope. NUMEROUS companies have made beholder knock-offs.
DL ... PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a pack of ProCreate as I don't think the sculpy would work for casting and Ramsay is definitely right after the plastic helmet melting during casting. So that would not work.
As for how would I use this figure. My first thought was I've always wanted to make (even before Impact!) a human team based on Wizards. ... This would be a great Ogre for that team.

Really?
Was that a case of TSR (when they existed) being lax in trademarking them, or just they were a nicer company than Grandma Wendy? _________________ What the hell am I doing on a mini's forum? I DON'T PAINT!!!

Use ProCreate. PM me your address and I'll send you a pack.

Your best bet would be to create a sprue with the stalks and then just make sure there is a good way for it to all join together. It all depends on how you make the stalks. If they are going every direction they need to be sprued seperate .. if they are sculpted to flow with the mould they can be part of the original sculpt. The best way is to picture the two part mould having liquid rubber flowing around your figure. Is there a piece that is at an angle that won't lift out? If so then it probably needs to be a seperate piece.

No really. There is a real good Yahoo group for sculptors ... but beyond that its hit or miss.
