about to paint Headslicer...so, the monster arrived in the mail.. mwahahaha.. he's gorgeous, and despite being 13 pieces, looks like he will take me just a few minutes to assemble - the guys at Iron Wind did a phenomenal job cutting up the original green and making all the joints, they're awesome..
anyhoo, reason for the post is because I need some advice and want to give you guys the chance to contruibute to the finished piece...
my own rat team is painted yellow and black (or, in fact, black and yellow ) and is called the Pissbog Squealers (I wish I could claim I came up with that name, but I believe I owe it to Hoomin - he may have stolen it himself of course )
so, for the dead player under Headslicer's hand, I wanted to paint him in a suitable NFL uniform to represent a hated rival of the Steelers..
according to online research, that should then be the Browns, but could also be the Bengals, Ravens or, for that matter, any other team. I was pretty sure in the 70s the Steelers had a big rivalry with the Cowboys too..??
Anyway, go ahead and vote if you like - vote will close in 5 days to give me enough time to paint the dead player before I field the team at an upcoming tournament (ironically, in Pennsylvania!)

It means that I didn't read your post. I just replied assuming you were painting the Wrat.
OKay, if it's a dead enemy then I want to see Cowboy colors under there.

Cowboys - I've no idea if they're a hated enemy or not, but as a Redskins fan I seem to have a strangle dislike for them....

as a huge Giants fan I could easily bring myself to paint a dead Cowboy.. perhaps I could paint up Romo and call the Giant Rat "Jessica"..

Tony Romo does enough damage to the Cowboys to curb any hatred I have for him.

As a Steelers fan I was tempted to say one of the other AFC North teams...but two of them are irrelevant and the other I grudgingly respect...so it's the next worst thing. Give the man a star.

If the team is painted Steelers, how could there be any other choice than their arch rivals for 59 years..... longest rivalry in football...
How can I be the only vote for the Browns (thus far)?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browns%E2%80%93Steelers_rivalry
|
Norse
|
I think that rivalry is not as apparent because:
1) the Browns just suck...
and
2) the original Browns are now the Baltimore Ravens...
I included it as an option because I know their rivalry is famous, but I guess to most guys under 40, it's more bark than bite these days...
anyhoo.. assembled and primed now - took about 40 minutes including all the prep work and filling with procreate.. later today, I break out the brushes...
oh, should mention, despite being gi-bloody-normous, I didn't need to pin him at all.. the Iron Wind team really made all the joints perfectly, so no need for the pin-vice!

What did you use to glue it together? Super glue?

Norse

yes, regular super glue - no accelarators, no 50/50 PVA mix, just good old fashioned file, glue and hold for 15 seconds..
started painting now.. droool...

What Norse said...the browns are a joke. Don't forget that the Steelers have lost a couple of Superbowls to the Cowboys so there's a definite grudge there...beyond the obnoxiousness of everything to do with that organisation. Personally I'd be tempted to go with a New England Patriot, as they're one of the Steelers' two rivals for the title of team of the decade (the other being the Colts...though tbh the Pats probably have the Noughties sewn up already. Daft and arbitrary title that it is.).
|
Norse
|
yeah, but I respect everything Manning (the elder) has done for football.. he's a classy guy and a magnificent QB.. he brought the Colts franchise back from the dead and will probably go on to break every record Favre set (except most INTs of course )
now I'm no fan of the Pats, especially because I live in New England and everyone assumes I must support them.. but I hate the Cowboys more than any other franchise (except maybe the 49ers).. that's why their recent 300+ yard performances upset me so much..
I'll post a pic tonight Phil - so far it's mostly drybrushing the fur to be honest - he has a lot of it, so I'm taking the "easy" way out..
and as it looks likely the victim will be Romo, I'll stay true to my word and paint the rat devouring him as a dumb blonde..

I have a rivalry grudge against them because of my Giants fandom, and my good buddy was a Cowboys fan.
I HATE Jerry Jones. That guy is a dumbass P.O.S. with ZERO class.
He's the type of lowlife that admires Vince McMahon.

Jerry Jones: "so, why do you think you would make a good Dallas player"
Player X: "well, see, I was arrested in the offseason and cut by my former club"

OK, this represents about 3 total hours work so far.. I reckon there is still another 5-7 hours of total work to go.. I started with the dirtiest job (the fur) which is why the mini generally looks untidy - the finished piece will look great, I promise...
I normally don't show WIPs because they often don't do much for the model, but seeing as Phil asked...

Looks good so far. Thanks for the WIP.

Good luck with the painting, Rams! (Of veel succes als je Nederlands nog goed is ... )

The only good thing you can say about Jerry Jones is that at least he isn't Al Davis. Or Daniel Snyder.
I feel so lucky to support a team owned by a family of football aristocrats, from all I have heard truely a great group of people.
Actually, that's why I can't hate the Ravens properly, despite them having the single most overrated player in Football history (the punk that wears 52...). Back at Pearlies, Valen and I were in Waterstones after dinner, and he recommended I buy and read "Next man up", a book about a year in the life of a football team. The team in the book is the Ravens, and absolutely everyone involved in a non-playing position in that organisation came across as good people.

Ray Lewis has benefitted enormously by being surrounded by excellent players - especially some very good and large DTs eating up blockers.
The biggest reason he gets so much coverage as far as I can see though is the fact that he's always so loud.
He is obviously good - but I think, and have done so for years, that there are a lot of much better and much less hyped Linebackers out there. The difference being that they get on with the job quietly and efficiently, which Lewis has never been capable of.
He'll get in the HoF for sure, probably first ballot...but finest MLBs ever? Nah. He's not in the league of guys like Lambert, Singletary, Butkus...hell, I'd even take an Urlacher or Zach Thomas ahead of Ray Lewis...for that matter I'd take James Farrior as well.

I'm not saying there is not some truth in what you are saying, but the numbers speak for themselves.. 10 probowls in 13 seasons is pretty unprecedented.. and he was injured in the 3 seasons he did not make it..
I guess it's kinda like any other top athlete though. I'm a big Baseball fan, so I can imagine the same big hitter playing on two separate teams. Let's say he's a real slugger and only gets one hit in every 5 at bats, but every hit is at least a double or a home-run, and he bats fourth in the lineup - a Papa Ortiz equivalent if you like.
So if he's at a good club, he will probably end the season with an average of .200 and 100-120 RBI because of all those good hitters in front of him getting on base.. if he's at a bad club, his .200 average is the same, but he may only finish on 40-60 RBI or so (almost all home runs)..
is the same guy at a different club a worse player?? does the first guy deserve the plaudits because the team also has some decent contact-hitters who bat before him??
anyway, my point is that 52 is an MLB machine - at a different club he probably would have had marginally less success.. perhaps at the Patriots he could have had more.. but fundamentally he's a great player.. a loud mouth jack-ass who beat a murder charge - yes, but that goes for half the NFL and NBA right now..

My vote for paint has to go to the Cowboys too. As a Dallas-area resident and occasional game viewer I can say they have not done much to bolster confidence in the team. Glad the whole TO drama is gone and I think Austin is doing a great job.
Great work on the paint so far! Looking forward to seeing that blue and silver!

I painted more flesh last night (mostly while the Phillies were at the plate ) but have not yet finished it.. will try to finish the flesh tonight and also re-do the black on everything else so the edges are crisper and cleaner.. the more I paint the mini, the more I love it!

well, Halloween and Baseball/Football have caused some real obstacles in recent days..

5 days to go to the tourney, so I better get organised!

OK, managed to get about an hour in last night between the kids going to bed and the Baseball/Football kicking off..
I show all four views of him below.. the flesh is now done, and I have started to block in white the areas which will eventually be bright yellow (much easier over white than black!) - don't be alarmed by the patch of bare metal on his right shoulder - he has a separate shoulder-pad which I will glue on at the end.. tonight will be finishing the yellow areas and tidying up the black..
enjoy...

Norse

couple more hours invested mostly in black and yellow, as well as horns and teeth.. mostly details, touch ups and metallics to go now...
|
Norse

OK, he'll be finished tonight - just need to finalise the metallics and a few other details, like the star on Romo's helmet.. d'oh!
plus stick him to a base..
I might get pics up late tonight of the finished piece, failing which Sunday.. tomorrow is a long day with 6 hours of driving and 6 hours of gaming...

Not to critise the painting (way better than mine), but is that a couple of white areas I see in the yellow on the shoulder pads, or just reflections?

I must admit I really enjoyed painting her - these days I tend to paint whole teams, which can get pretty demoralising after a while.. so it's nice to sit and paint a single model every now and again, especially one this eye-catching.. I kept wishing I had more time to finish her, but I know that I needed the tight deadline of yesterday's tourney to get her done..
she helped me win Best Painted (thanks to the PA crew for being so welcoming!) and in 3 games she failed no significant actions on the pitch either!
