ARGH!!! Disneyt to do John Carter on Mars!Aaahhhh!! This is one of my favorite pulp novels. Well "A Princess of Mars" and the whole series is.
It was bad enough when Pixar was going to do it, but now DISNEY!!??!!
I feel sick.

Last year I heard there was a Korean Anime company working on this same project, the same company who did the art for Steamboy in fact. . . I wonder if Disney is buying their product? If so then you can count on some outstanding artwork at least!

Nope, this is half live-action and half CGI. It was originally Pixar but then kicked over to Disney. It's possible that another company is doing the movie as well...it may be public domain by now?

As I understand it, eighty years is the life of a copyright, thats fifty years plus a maximum thirty year of extentions. The ERB Family has been moaning that for some time now and recently lost a copyright challenge (On Tarzan I think) though they continue to tie it up in the courts on appeals. Parker Brothers recently lost thier monopoly on the game Monopoly for the same reason. . .

And Disney are such hypocrites because half their movies use public domain writings as the story and titles!
Luckily there are those on their way to the Supreme Court to challenge the extensions on copyrights. I'm a major believer that public domain properties are important for the advancement of literature and art.
Tarzan is a great example. It's more than just a series of novels, in fact most people probably haven't read them. They may, or may not have seen the movies but everyone knows who Tarzan is. Everyone knows his yell, and everyone associates him with vine swinging and rescuing Jane.
It's become part of our culture, and we should be able to do with it as we please. As a creator I can say I firmly believe that most other creators would be overjoyed to have their work be so loved, and so well known that once it was public domain there were other interpretations of it. Alan Moore may be the exception.
It's one of the things Tolkien expresses in his forward to Lord of the Rings, which is why I think the purists about the movie have completely misunderstood the book. He wants movies made, he wants the story to continue, and he wants other people to use it for their own messages.
Anyway, rant over...Disney just pisses me off so bad.
