Bodhi's Female Vamp LAST WIPS! Next time will be finishedBy all means:
I'm trying to go for a "Barbarella" style here
Material is one part blue from green stuff, one part brown from brown stuff and one part white from brownstuff. The result is black - but there's quite a lot of flash in the pics.
Oh and the odd wrinkle across her breast is because I thought I'd have a shoulderguardstrap crossing over that breast and under the other breast diagonally across the body.

Wow! She's looking great!

Looking good so far. It will be interesting to see this develop along the way similar to ewans ice troll.

by far an excellent start. Looking forward to seeing more progress pics.

Tried a daylight pic. Not very succesful. Well I got started on boots and hair and the front of her dress is done:

i like the way the hair is coming on!
it sure will be nice once its done :)

Close to done now, but my digital camera ran out of batteries so I'll have to load them.
I'm thinking maybe I should have some decorations on the knee and shoulder pads. Upside down crosses would be fitting for a vampire (she has her two vampire teeth now) don't you think?
|
Fubar
|
The photos are a tad too dark on my screen to make out much of the detail, but she's looking to be nicely formed, and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how she turns out.
Upside-down crosses would be very suitable for detailing, if not entirely generic (not that I think that is a problem).

Norse

hard to see all details, but the pose is very good as is the general proportioning (maybe her forehead is a bit high?)..
how did you intend to work the arms.. wrapped around a ball or ready to pounce?? maybe you could even do 2 sets of arms, one as ball carrier and one as ball fetcher??
anyway, I like what I see.. will she be wearing a helmet??
for future reference, I'm not sure if you are working from a sketch or just sculpting as you go.. would have been good to see a preliminary sketch to be able to see how much on track you are...

This one started with a female torso that I sculpted long ago and had lying around and I just went from there
|
Norse

ah! a cannibalized creation!
|
Bodhi

She won't have a helm, her hair is rather in the way for that.
Also I thought about making a "holding the ball" pose but then thought that would make it a displaypiece instead of a gaming piece. In a game the ball would be moving all over the field right?
So She's got one hand outstretched (left) and the other bent to follow the curve of her spine more or less.
Can't find the friggin' battery loader. I allways misplace that take
Like your avatar Norse. Was it sculpted like that or is it a conversion?
|
Norse
|
it's a conversion ...
and as you can see, he's holding a ball.. nothing wrong with a model having a sculpted ball in their hands mate.. although I agree it does look silly on big guys..
now get some new batteries and let's see how she is doing..
|
Bodhi
|
No battery loader. Found some ordinary batteries though. They last about ten minutes in my camera
Shoulderpads and keepads will take some sanding to get sharp, the hands are the basic outlines and will have some detailing added to them, I'll add elbow pads and some padding for the underarms. Also a few buckles and beltparts left to do. And some more work on the hair.
Some sculptors seem to find detailing the funniest part. I find posing of the body the funniest part and detailing slightly boring but it should soon be finished.
At least the general idea should be fairly clear by now

Looking Bodhi
Maybe jumping the gun, and you still have a bit to do, but the arms look a bit thin. But otherwise, a damned fine job.
|
Bodhi
|
Yes the arms will be fattened up a bit. Also addition of guards for the lower arm (and backside of the hand, samurai style - that's cheating that is. I hate sculpting backsides of hands ) will have a bit of a fattening effect.
|
Norse
|
beginning to look interesting.. I prefer the lower half to the upper half to be honest.. nothing against the quality of the sculpting, but just a matter of how you "see" a vampire.. will you be adding more hair or is she meant to have a partially shaven head??
also, not many people run with a hand stroking their thigh, should this not be a fist ready to strike whatever her left hand is about to grab??
really like the boots though..
|
Bodhi
|
Good point about the left hand. Can't get the flat hand to look good anyway so I'll cut it of and redo it as suggested. More hair has been added. No half shaved head.

She's coming along very well. The arms look a tad odd at the moment, and I'm glad you are following Norse's suggestion about the right one. You could always have her holding a ball under her right arm if you can't get it looking quite right. I find that arms on Fantasy Football models are rather tricky as they don't tend to be holding any items, so it is hard to figure out where exactly to put them!
I agree with you about the detailing - posing models is definitely the fun bit!

I've had some practice. My first major commision was a whole soccer (if you're american) team. I had problems with every single hand (I don't even want to talk about pegs on football shoes ) . I'm having problems with the individual portraits of famous footballplayers right now. Portraits in 28 mm are tough.
Arms are being fleshed out as we speak. Having some trouble with the outstretched arm as it isn't attached very well (on purpose since I think it will have to be cast separately - if not I can attach it better.) so I'll have to remove it once the rest of the figure is done, hold it with a pair of pliers, and thus flesh it out.
|
Norse
|
what are you sculpting with? (I mean the material, not the tool) - it already looks like a metal cast to me..
|
Chairface
|
I was thinking that too.
|
Bodhi
|
One part blue from green stuff, one part white from brown stuff and one part brown from brown stuff. This is my first sculpt entirely in that material. I like it much better than pure green stuff. Cures quite a bit faster though (30-40 minutes or so) so one has to work pretty quick.
I know of at least one professional sculptor who uses blue from green stuff and brown from brownstuff so it should stand casting fine.
Here's a beefed up right arm and the elbow guards/wristguards - The leg got a bit scraped when I removed the hand but that'll be easily smoothed over (was gonna do that anyway):
|

to me, that arm is looking great! along with the rest of the sculpt ;) i really like dynamic minis not the "poser" minis (an example being a lot of the 3rd ed fantasy football minis look like) and looks like she could be running after a certain slayer
|
Sallacious

This is awesome. She's really coming along great!
|
Darkson

Just a quick comment (I do like this, honest!).
Would it look more natural if the right arm was angled back a little futher?
I'm no exppert, but it just looks a little "wrong".
|
Bodhi
|
You may be right but what usually keeps me from finishing sculpts is that I tend to redo and redo and redo details just like that and in the end I never get it done. I'm trying to teach myself to avoid that. So I'll just work on finishing this now.
I also think that this picture straight from the side gives a wrong impression as there is a slight forshortening to the arm. The elbow bends inwards a bit toward the spine

OK, last set of WIPS. Still some cleaning up (and a left hand) left to do:
Edit: oh oh: The armature for the hair shows. Gotta fix that...

Nice dynamic pose Bodhi. She's looking really good. Um, one small thing. I think she could use some, uh, enhancements in the chest region.

I was really trying hard NOT to make oversized breasts. Making them oversized is far to easy - they tend to become that regardless of wether you want them to be or not. Bodytype is based on Carolina Klyft - Swedish athlete (Don't know what the sport is called in English. You know - where you run, jump, throw spear and two other things). So I wanted a fit sportswoman, not a centerfold lady. Much as I love the Libby figures they also do not have athletes bodies but the bodies of a normal sized womanly looking woman. I felt that pinup outfit combined with athletes body made sort of a nice contrast
|
Norse
|
it's called modern heptathlon I think.. and the swedish chick is a hottie..
anyway, I think she needs a shoulder pad on her right shoulder to help balance her out a bit more.. plus I'm still not seeing a lot of detail to be honest.. pics are still a bit dark...
when Mike and I were working on the wizard, this is the WIP shot he sent me:
I need soemthing as clear as this to really see the details..
|
Bodhi
|
Pics were taken last night. I think pics taken in clear daylight - with the addition of light bulbs as well - should solve that problem. Another shoulder guard. I'll check if I can squeeze it in. Might be a bit difficult the way she's holding her arm right now but I sure will try.
On the matter of details. Personally I like the shoulderguards best clean but some people seem to like spikes and studs and whatnot. Is that something you'd want?
|
Norse
|
clean is probably more user friendly.. allows people to add numbers or spikes as they wish.. more flexible than a huge spike with 50% of people want to cut off..

What a sculpt!
Very cool looking dynamic pose.
Also nice to see the WIP pics.
Do you have some pictures of the armature(s) you used? May be very helpful for guys like me who think about to start sculpting.
|
Bodhi
|
Not of this one I'm afraid. For the next sculpt I do I'll try to get earlier in progress pics.
I'm doing some stickfigures of suggested poses for fantasy football now that might be a good example.
For this one the basis was one piece of wire twisted to the shape of the spine. I then did the torso and drilled holes for the arm legs and head. Gael Goumon has a nice tutorial for this technique at his site (Search for Mandragore miniatures - I think) - it's his normal technique. I normally just make a stick figure of one piece of wire twisted together - leaving a loop for the arms that I later cut open. So this way of doing the armature was a first for me.

I realise it may be too late on the sculpt for this Bodhi..I was wondering how the mini would look with no hair 'nosferatu style'?
Just an idea..

Not really to late. Since te hair is free floating it's comparatively easy to snip of. You can see in the first picture aproximately how it would look.
Hopefully it would be slightly more Sinead O'connor style though - I TRIED to make a fairly pretty female head
There was one commentor who liked the hair especially though. Snipping the head of and making one with, one without, hair might be an option here?

This looks like a wonderful sculpt! I really love it.
Leave the chest as it is though. Ive seen enought huge knockers on minis. This mini has a superb (and rare) realism.

And I definatly prefer her with hair.

I'm openminded
We could have a poll...

My only issue with the hair is that for her hair to be in the position ... she is either running into a gale or is running 60 mph.
I like her with hair ... but it just seems unnatural. I admire the more realistic woman approach for body style ... but the hair pulls a lot of that realism factor for me.

To add to what Galak is saying. it is because I think the hair is all straight and back. "Pointed to the rear " as it were.
It the hair was more bouncy and curled up / under (as opposed to pointing straight out) it might look like a more dynamic real hairstyle...
I'd post picks, but I have yet to figure out the link / image hosting thing out. Try looking for women's soccer pics online ?
|
Bodhi

I'll do that (guess women runners should do as well) Thanks for the tip.
I'm not feeling entirely comfortable with the hair either. You helped me put the finger on what it was that seemed wrong about it.
If she was running Extremely fast - plausible for a vampire I guess - it really should be reflected in her dress to. That has a lot "lower speed" to its creases.
Edit: Just discovered that the armature for the hair is bendable - despite being covered in putty) so it was pretty quick to adjuist the hair simply by bending it down a bit

So whats to stop you from offering her with two heads?

GalakStarscraper

| Chairface wrote: | | So whats to stop you from offering her with two heads? | Suggestion here perhaps.
Create the figure with hair ... if it gets the needed 99 pre-orders to cast ... then you could take the green and remove the hair and modify her a bit to create a second player.
While I love the Heresy approach for some figures (ie having build it yourself players). There are a lot of gamers who love not having some assembly required on their minis.
Just my thoughts on this.
Galak
|
Bodhi

Quite a plausible suggestion. The second player could also have the pose slighly tweaked, maybe some small differences in attire and so forth. This is what has been done on the soccer players I did. I sculpted eight players and then made three more through converting those casts into slightly different poses. All heads are separate for them though - in order to increase variation possibilities.

I would love to see a pic of your soccer players Bodhi!

Soon I hope. When they get down to releasing them. I'm not mentioning company name nor showing sneek peeks of commisioned work until it's released. I feel it's safest that way.

How did I miss this thread?
Those look great!
BTW: Ewan are you a fan of the Nosferatu look too?
The first vampire movie I saw was Salem's Lot, so naturally the first vamp book I read was Salem's Lot. I didn't read Dracula until later and I just grew up looking at vampires as nasty ugly monsters and not as the Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman sex fiends that they have become today.

I'll be posting pics of the Female Vamp on the 'targetted' section of the site soon. The mini looks really nice and delicate Bodhi - really nice detail work
@DL - Yeah - Nosferatu is THE classic vampire (to me) Yeah, the novel was penned years and years ago and depicted Dracula as a sophisticated person but for me, those early flickering black and white images of something deeply un-natural, stalking through the ship etc seem perfect.

I think that if a few casts get made and one of them gets painted up by a skilled painter and that picture put up on the site, then that will probably increase the sales quite a bit. I think many people find it hard ordering a figure after having seen the green only.

I think you're absolutely right. Once one is painted up it should be flying off the shelves.
