Deadwood...... wow.... tease over! ;-)

Hi guys,

I have just seen and approved the green for the new multi-part Deadwood and I must say I am seriously in love..

Galak may well post a pic later, but I'm more of a tease than him..

I really hope to have him cast up by Gencon.. he deserves a shot at immortality..

tease now over..

Who are you and what have you done with Norse?
Redfang

I heard this voice, as if someone was standing right in front of me, but I didn't see anyone...

that's because I'm tying your laces together..
Norse

OK, get some tissues before you drool on your keyboard.. the tease is now over...

Norse

and to answer the age old query, what does a deadwood look like on the inside... here is the answer....

good, huh?

said you would like him...
fatgoblin

yes, very nice!

I want it now!
Fubar

Very nice!
Who's the sculptor?
Norse

Alex, the same guy who did the gnomes and the NAF world cup team.. his sculpting technique has really come on in the last year, but most staggering is his speed.. he can do a figure in a day or two..
Stout Youngblood

Bast@#$ I have to wait until I get home before I can see the picture. Boy do I hate work firewalls.
Dark Lord

It reminds me very much of this Halloween candle holder I had as a kid.

Yeah, I was a weird kid.

It looks great!
Nyarlathotep

July, you say?

I can't wait!

Much more likely that this guy will first show up at GenCon in August along with these figures:

2 Werelings
Black Widows Widowmaker
Ra Thrower
Nekhebet Midfielder

I don't think our caster will be able to have them cast before GenCon ... even getting them by GenCon looks like it might be a race.

Galak
Norse

a race we can hopefully take steroids for, right?

That Deadwood treeman is really beautiful, I will buy it for sure.

I only have one little regret : it seems there is nothing clear which indicates he's a fantasy football player.

And I have a question : where's his brother ?

I'm working on that brother question.

Also ... why does a treeman need to have a shoulder pad? Seriously ... he's a tank already. I use a standard Grandma Wendy Treeman for Deeproot and he looks just fine in my team.

Though I don't plan on buying any Deadlings, I still might pick this guy up at GenCon, he looks really cool.
Justin Kase

Wow - nice Really love the skulls inside the hollow area - how much is this guy going to go for?

Almost makes me want to stop working on my undead treeman sculpt

Would love to know how he did the bark texture - I've been experimenting a bit, but his looks pretty damned good
fen

So... Does he have always hungry then?

I'm going to get one of these and half fill up the inside with digestive acids.

Honestly don't know. Somewhere between $14 and $21 would be my guess (yes ... big range ... but that's how uncertain I am) ... but I won't be able to price it until I see the production costs on the final figure.

Alex said he went to a local park and studied the look of an actual fallen and decaying tree to get the feel for how it looks.

Finally was able to get back to this site. Norse, you were correct, definitely worth the wait. WOW!!!

That's so great I tripped when I saw it.

Wait. My laces are tied. How did that happen. Damn you Shoelace-Pixy!!!

Awful. No, wait, the other thing... great! I want it!

Is the inside of the mouth sculpted, in case you didn't want to put the skulls in?
Dark Lord

I think it would be cool to carve the player's number into his bark.

And maybe something like "R.M. + T.A. 4 Ever" in a heart or something.

Darkson wrote:

Yes.

The skull pile is an extra piece that can be glued in if desired. But the hollow inside is sculpted all the way around in case you don't.

===

And DL ... I think that would be a excellent green stuff conversion (and a pretty simple one to do at that.

Galak
Dark Lord

Probably wouldn't even require any green stuff really. I was thinking one could just literally carve it in there with an X-acto blade.

Anyway, I have done a couple sketches for the beholder ref. I'm working up my courage to start modeling it for real.

I'm also working on a few Elfball action drawings. Sort of fine art stuff, not really rule book cartoons or sketches but some really fine black and white drawings.

Anyway, back to this awesome Treeman! I'm so excited about the minis coming out of Impact! Really cool!

Excellent (well, the bank manager might no think so!), that'll be two of them as well.

Yea... I'm gonna get me one of those too... very well done!

Great model. 2 questions.

Will this be available soon?

Sizewise, is this comparable to the Ice Troll?

It is now in the store (Fen has my only copies of the figure which is why you see greens and sketches currently). The production copies are due to arrive on Monday.

As for size ... this is a Treeman ... he is 45mm to the eye.

Jonny_P

Thanks!

He will be mine...oh yes...he will be mine.
Bonehead

I will get one or two of these guys.
A very very nice sculpt.
Dark Lord

I'm going in for a job interview today, and if I get the job it should mean some new business for Impact!
Igor Tahavanale

Quick question...

without wishing to sound too negative, why do the tops of these guys (the hollow bit) come in 4 bits instead of 2? There's a fair weight to support in those arms!

I know the answer will be "caster said so" but there are a few large peices in there already, and making the hollow parts bigger (and therefore fewer) would have made a lot of sense.

In fairness I should point out that I'm a gamer, not a hobbyist, by the way. Difficult models scare me
GalakStarscraper

Casting the hollow trunk in two pieces was not advised by our caster. In order to get the look that we wanted of the hollow tree we were advised by our caster to divide the hollow trunk into 4 pieces instead of 2.

This wasn't our decision ... we sent our caster the sketch for the Deadwood and had our caster advise us on how to sculpt it and the caster said if we wanted it to cast well that it should be done in 4 pieces instead of 2.

Galak
GalakStarscraper

Casting curved pieces is very tough just so you know.

That's the other reason for 4 pieces.

I will confirm that these guys are extremely difficult to put together. The first one I put the trunk together first, then added the arms. This seemed to be the supposed way to do this, yet the heavy arms had trouble staying on until the glue set, even wnen pinned and tacked. The second one I put the arms on the side pieces first, then assembled the trunk. This was easier to initially put together. but the arm weight wanted to pull the sides down in odd angles. The back piece seems too small to fit on the Shredder model. It fits perfectly on Stumpy, but comes off a bit short width-wise on Shredder. The Torso join on the Shredder legs just appears a bit bigger. Either it was the join size, or possibly the arm weight pulling down on the sides, I had to use green-stuff to fill in one pretty large (almost 1/4 inch) gap on Shredder where the stump wall plates did not meet.

Despite the work I had to put in to get these two together, I am quite pleased with the end result! Great looking models, for sure!
Igor Tahavanale

I've only done one of my two so far, and yep, it was tricky. BUT, it was well worth the effort (and the bit of skin I left superglued to his butt!). Had to use ProCreate a few times on the trunk, but it's a great figure.
Dark Lord

I haven't got mine yet but I'm wondering about pinning the arms. The arms look like the have a lot of depth at the should...the trunk not so much.

Did you have to pin it straight through the trunk?
Lychanthrope

I watched a guy put this together at GenCon. He pinned each side piece with a pin pointing down and a pin pointing back into the back piece, nearer the top edge. He also GS the cracks. It looked good, but it took some time to do. He's on this forum somewhere and can give you more details.
Norse

That was Majortusk.. and to be honest, he took more time to do than I would have done, but then when I saw how he had painted the inside, I understood why..

That must have been Major Tusk ?

Andy I think his name was ?

That model was looking very awesome when I saw it last. He does great work.

ahh. Norse posted while I was typing...

And cheers to Norse for that Green Night Elf model he worked on. That one looked good too.
Lychanthrope

Maybe we can get him to share some pics. That's at least the third time I've heard about how the inside looked when he was done. I left just before he started painting. I'd love to see it.
Mo

I just finished assembling mine, and am quite happy only using 2 pins on the torso and 1 for each arm.

I pinned the front torso straight down into the hips where the plates overlap. Pinned both arms to the side pieces. Filled the gaps on these with Testors' Contour Putty -- way cheaper and easier than Green Stuff. GLued the side pieces in. Puttied the cracks. Pinned the back piece into the back edge of the hips. Puttied the cracks. With so many contact points for the glue on different edgges, I think 2 torso pins is quite sufficient. I also put a fine layer of CA glue on top of the putty to really harden it up.

These models really could have been sculpted with built-in pins and holes to make them easier to assemble. A nub sticking out of each arm, and matching socket in the side pieces. Nub sticking out of the bottom of the back, and matching socket in the hips. The front piece could have been molded with a notch in the back edge of the bottom lip, fitting over a matching dovetail on the hip.

(Many of the Deadlings could also benefit from having tabs on the bottom that aren't larger than the slots in their plastic bases! I've had to trim them down. Many are too long, some are too tall.)

Also, the display Deadwood at GenCon was brilliant with a small red LED set inside it. I'd much rather do this than use the cast metal inserts.

What type of bulb and battery was used for that?

Cheers,
Maureen
Lychanthrope

Just by looking MO I'd say a red LED and a battery from a car fob, remote locking thing.

I have a new project I know college kids and we have a monstrous municipal money-waste in our town called the "Bridge to Nowhere" or "The Plank"

It was voted the "biggest waste of taxpayer money" in a century or something. $7 million and it leads to a River boat that is moving down river.
Anyway, it's got a crap light show inside it. Currently the city is having problems keeping bums out of it in the winter.

Can't wait to organize 50 college kids to plaster this thing with $1000 worth of LED light magnets.
majortusk

Well, I have a deadwood coming from Impact as we speak, I will assemble mine and take some pix during the assembly. Write up a tutorial or something.

The Deadwood I painted at Gen Con and finished afterwards is now in Toms hands. Wish I took a few pics of it. Hopefully we can all see it soon.
