Doctor Who - Turn Left

Wow!  Just wow!

I don't want it to finish, but I am so looking forward to the season finales.

And Catherine Tate get's better with each episode.

Roll on next Saturday...
fen

Aye, she's a brilliant actress and that was an utterly fantastic episode which she carried wonderfully without Tennant's aid.  It was most certainly the best episode of the entire season so far and I don't say that lightly because it was written by RTD and normally he's terrible.

Has Ms. Piper always had that lisp?

Spoiler Alert as I'm going to speculate three things about the upcoming finale.

Skip over this if you don't want any spoilers as it might well, spoil something.

Right:
1.  Davros returns (safe bet this one)
2.  Find out about where the bees are disappearing to and why it's so important.
3.  Donna dies.

I sadly called all three of these back at the start of the season over on tv.com.
Rab

Agreed - a top notch episode, and I'm really looking forward to the finale.

You reckon? I must have missed the clues to that (I never go to spoiler or speculation sites), or blinked during the end of episode bit.

fen wrote:

Yes, I've been wanting to find this out since it was first mentioned ages ago.

fen wrote:

Maybe, but I reckon that there might be something more along the lines of the whole 'turning into a demi-god' thing that went with the earlier Rose=Bad Wolf Dalek-killing episode from two series back. Particularly in light of her being 'so important' and the 'what will you become' comment from the fortune-teller.

Whichever way they take it, it looks very exciting from the trailer
Dark Lord

I try so hard to avoid these since we're a couple episodes behind us.

We just had the Library episode part 1 and my head is spinning!

I cannot wait for the finale!!

I don't hate Donna Noble but I do cringe every single time they put in sexual tension between her and the Doctor. ENOUGH!

Don't she float your boat?

Do you watch DW Confidential on BBC3?  RTD said that 2 would be answered, and the trailer should #1.  Also why planets are going missing and other stuff mentioned throughout the series.

I find her annoying and unattractive. Now hotness is not necessarily a common companion trait but with the last two being so smokin' I have been spoiled. However, it would be nice if the companion wasn't constantly saying, 'I told you so!" or second guessing hard choices the Doctor made when she wasn't even there. She's a pompous self righteous ass!

That and I am sick to death of Doctor/Companion romances and love triangles.

seconded :)

also, i think this one doesnt hold up to Silence in the Library.

You want to see Billie in DW Confidential without make-up - there's a mental image ruined!
Dark Lord

She's topless in whatever show she's doing now. Not that great actually.

Honestly she's only hot to me because she has that whole trashy thing going on.

Doctor Martha on the other hand. Mmmn mmn! She was fine!

It's been confirmed now (check the internet elsewhere if you want to see), but there were a lot of clues about it this season in the dialog of various episodes.  If you know enough about the old series (and many of us do) the lines are all there clear as day.

Maybe, I shouldn't really say much more.

I think you're misreading the situations, there is no sexual tension between her and the Doctor.  It's a deliberate decision the writers made after having Rose and Martha fawn all over him with unrequited love.
Dark Lord

Part 1 of the Sontaran episode when she was going to leave and see her family and the Doctor misread the situation and got all swoony.

The Silent Library part 1 they had the whole pretty boy exchange.
Not to mention the way she was jealous of the 'other woman'

She told Martha that she wants to be with the Doctor forever.

They constantly do the "we're not a couple" joke.

And that is just off the top of my head at 4am with no sleep. It's subtle but it is there. Especially when you consider they hated each other when they first met; now they have awkward hugs, the Doctor stammers and gets flustered around her.

Not saying they have a romance but there is tension there.  The potential is there and it makes me annoyed at least once per episode, and then something cool happens and I forget it.
fen

The Doctor is more enamoured with her than she is with him.  He needs her a lot more than the other way round.

And the we're "not a couple" line is the most visible sign of the decision to not have the relationship go the same way as the previous ones - that's not an indicator of sexual tension, quite the opposite.

Anyway, there is always bound to be some sort of feelings as RTD is in charge and that's what he likes, plus there's logically going to be something to deal with as it's a man and a woman travelling together in close proximity.  But that doesn't mean it's sexual tension as such.  You might be reading it like that, but trust me it's not the intended effect.
skatingtortoise

in any case cant wait for river song to return with Moffat in charge. good times.

But there is something there. Whether it's accoring to Hoyle sexual tension or not. It's a note they keep playing and it's off key to my ears.

Especially every danged episode.

Me thinks the gentleman doth protest too much. And in my opinion that is the problem.

There has been the same amount of awkward emotional scenese with the Doctor and Donna as there was with the Doctor and Rose at this point. You can say you are in the know all you want, but in the end you are just seeing the same things from a different point of view. Yours is explaining them away more than mine.

And like I said, I don't see them as in love. What I see is something that they do every episode that just keeps the tiniest possibility alive. Just a little glance or remark each show that makes it possible down the road.

I want to see it squashed and extinguished forever. AND THEN IGNORED! Make it impossible and then move on. Or at the very very very very least not brought up every single episode.

Bottom line is I just can't stand Donna Noble (or Catherine Tate for that matter.)

Dark Lord wrote:

Or perhaps because fen has seen both the actors and writers say that?
Dark Lord

They said that there would be no romance between the two. That's fine. They won't share a kiss or a tender embrace. I understand what he said.

But a romance and romantic tension are two completely different things.

The Doctor and Martha didn't have a romance either, did they?   Oh and I guess I forgot that television writers are a completely honest lot that have never in history said two characters wouldn't hook up when in fact, they did.

I have a bridge for sale, if you're interested.

I'm not talking about what is GOING to happen. I am talking about the stupid remarks, glances, stammers, awkward tense moments and general school boy behavior that they both HAVE ALREADY exhibited at least once per episode.

If there is no romantic tension then what the hell was that whole thing when he thought Donna was leaving in the Sontaran Strategem? If you sit there and tell me there was no romantic tension in that scene I'll call you thick.

And why doesn't the Doctor tell her shut up anymore? Go back and watch the Runaway Bride and then watch the Sontaran Strategem. It's like two different couples. :puke:

And fine, you want to get into semantics (as usual) then don't call it sexual tension, or romantic tension. Call it the Doctor's Wibbly Wobbly Smootchie Wootchie feelings. Whatever you want to call it, it's there and it's annoying.

And my original point was that despite it being very subtle, and low key it is exacerbated by my dislike for Donna Noble. So yes, I may have been annoyed by a few innocent situations...but I would hope that you are not so blind as to think all of them were innocent.

When they stop have awkward moments and everyone around them stops assuming they are a couple I will stop assuming they are "Sam & Diane"

Honestly it's like you guys didn't ever get Cheers over there.

How about I've talked to them about it?  That do?

It does seem that the intention and the response are not matching up, at least in DLs case the spirit of the writing and acting is in fact resulting in a perception of sexual tension.  On the other hand I'm not seeing it, but that's fine.  Because half the enjoyment of a story is how the viewer/reader/listener inteprets it.  There's no right answer here, I was just expressing what the initial intention was.
Dark Lord

Well I'm fully willing to admit that some (if not most) of what I am seeing is more sensing...and that my senses are skewed by blind raging hatred for Donna Noble's big fat pompous mouth. (Honestly, why not Rosie O'Donnell as a companion? ACK!)

I should probably just hope she does in fact die.

What worries me, I guess, is that when the show goes on hiatus next year and they do the movies we will be stuck with Ms. Noble for the duration. GAWD!

And by the way, how old is she supposed to be? I would have guess in her 40's by the look of her but when she went to see her family she was hanging out with her mom and grandfather. OKay, not too weird for a 40 something...but they treated her like she was a 20 year old kid home from college. WTF? Sarah Jane Smith is more spritely than that crone.

Sorry, I just don't like the old bag.
fen

Late Thirties.

And while I'm posting I forgot to list prediction #4.

One word of true awesomeness.

Mickey.
Dark Lord

Yeah they should totally have Mickey come back and Martha!

Now that would be a love triangle I would be interested in. Mickey and Martha hook up and the Doctor laments what he was too stupid to jump at!

"I'm the tin dog!"
fen

Mickey's still hooked up with Rose afaik, they both left to live together in the Cyberman Dimension at the end of season 2.
Dark Lord

Well that's like death in X-men comics. No problem!

I thought it was going to be terrible but it didn't do the whole decisions/dimensions fallacy and turned out to be decent.

Fingers crossed that a certain irritating assistant from the 70s dies an horrific death.

I believe Mickey is busy at the moment making critically acclaimed grown up gangster films.

SJS has her own spin off series, so I'm pretty sure she's safe.

You'll have to wait and see if I'm right about Mickey, but just remember.  I live in the city where they film this show.  I don't know what that means with regards to my predictions though...

To wet your appetites I provide the first "I told you so".

This is the official BBC trailer for "Stolen Earth" which airs on this Saturday.  Naturally it contains scenes from the episode, so don't watch if you don't want the episode to be spoiled.

MadLordAnarchy

I know you are right on SJS, just wishful thinking really - it is always good to live in hope.

There's quite a lot of Mickey rumour, somewhat surprised that none of the many interviews with Noel Clarke about Adulthood have talked about Who.

Spoilers are bad things and I'm a little annoyed that I saw the trailer at the end of the last episode as it gave far too much away.

Also I personally very much enjoy Donna repeatedly saying "what a f***ing liberty" as that character has always been comedy gold.
