evil dwarves and imps WIPsome things I'm working on that I thought I would share with you guys! People have been telling me to get the evil dwarf casted so I'm just checking in to see my options.
evil dwarves (have to redo the middle fella's fist, its all messed up. And the helmet on the bottom fella is silly, have to change as well)
imps (something silly I knocked out. The face plate grill is a bit crappy but should be ok-ish at that size... I hope!)

right now, only one of the dwarves and one of the imps are finished, as in the pic above. A few of the sculpts had a bit more work done to them but none are completed yet.

I don't know if this helps when casting is involved but curving brass rods to use as face bars works very well when sculpting. I think brass isn't a problem when making the molds as I've seen greens with the rods showing before.
Sadly I still can't manage/work out how get the surface of my green stuffing smooth, which is why I'm doing Zombies atm. If it doesn't turn out smooth I can claim that their armour is old and battered.

gloss varnish it before you paint it.. nice and smooth surface.. just watch that you do not obscure too much detail..

I'm told that these work nicely for smoothing greenstuff.

Brass rods are okay for casting. But you will need to fill in the space behind the rods so there is no empty space. I'll try one to see if I can get it to behave...
yup, clay shapers are what I'm using to do the majority of my sculpting. They are great. Its basically paint brush with a rubber tip rather than hairs. You can sometimes find them in a well stocked art supply store. There are various types with different firmness. don't get the colour shpers, with the white tip as they are too soft. I'm using a grey tipped one.
One thing you can do is to get it as smooth as possible, wait for the putty to cure a bit until its more firm, then smoothen it some more. Make sure you keep your tool very lubricated to get a smooth result! (actually, I'm not that good so it takes me quite a while to get the putty into the shape I want so by then, it has cured somewhat so I just keep smoothing it and I don't have to wait...)

The glossing has worked perfectly, so I'll stick with that for now until I can find some clay shapers.
I'll show you all the glossed job once it's painted up (half done now) it's a different mini though, one I forgot to take a 'before' picture with.

it's fine if you are just painting over a conversion, but it's not an option if the green is going to be cast..

speaking of size..... on the next progress update, would you happen to have an official Grandma Wendy Chaos Dwarf to stand next to your creations when you snap the picture? I was interested in how well these guys would fit in with the official team. Are they bigger or smaller?
Another quick question, what is your current vision for this team? How many unique players were you thinking of sculpting? All 6 different dwarfs? Were you possibly considering different bodies for the bull centaur?
Could you drop us any inside info about how/if/when these guys would be cast? I see earlier in the thread that one/two of them have been shipped out already? Are these going to be cast up as they are completed? Will they make it to the store as individuals or will we have to wait for the whole team before they are in the store? Maybe it is too soon to know this. Sorry, just excited by these minis.
They look amazing. I pose these questions to help me decide what I am going to do with my current chaos dwarf team.
I'm definately in the minority, but I really kind of like the goofy hats of the official minis :). But the lack of variety and the availability (at a reasonable price) is making me take a hard look at these fantastic figs.
Thanks, keep the updates coming, they look great.
could I throw a vote out there for the bull centaur to be the next fig you work on... I'm dieing to see him :).

Ted ...
Okay due to a technical issue ... the Imps and first Dwarf did not go to the caster.
They are due to be shipped to me in the USA this weekend and I will be putting them into the mastering process as soon as I get some figures in from Ramsay/Norse that he received at the Dutch Open. I am really hoping that I will have the next two Egyptian figs as well.
Now the Evil Dwarves will go into the store I would guess in March. The Imps will need to be minorly reworked by FatGoblin from a set of masters that we send him and then they will go into the next production run so hopefully in the store in April.

I did want to make 6 different ones. Right now I only have 2 made, and another 2 half done. Progress is a bit slow as I get sucked into other projects now and then.
I was thinking of having the boar centuar in two parts and after it is cast, hopfully it would be easy to convert the beast part a bit to change it, and do a new dwarf part...
I don't have any of the chaos dwarf players so I can't do a comparison :( and actually I like the goofy helmets too!

Galak | Comparison shots as promised (he is pretty much dead on scale). Also Fatgoblin as you can hopefully tell ... this means the 2nd Dwarf arrived safely. Just waiting for the other Dwarf and the 2 Imps safely and then its all off to the caster for real this time.

thank you for the pictures....
this is a more informational/debate question than a request...
Could you sculpt a chaos dwarf with a big goofy hat (and see him in the store) and not step on IP toes of Grandma Wendy? I just kind of wondered where the line in the sand was sort of drawn. I mean lots of companies make "orks"... but how close can you get to a "chaos dwarf" and not get Grandma Wendy's panties in a bunch :).
the Warcraft Orks come to mind because in my eyes they are a direct ripoff of Grandma Wendy.
again, not meant to be a thread hijack, but "inquiring minds want to know"... whoops more IP theft :)....
again, thanks for the effort for the pics....

I don't think that is his question Galak.
It's more of an info question. Grandma Wendy Chaos Dwarfs with the hats have a very unique look. Could someone sculp some other CDs with "big hats" and NOT GET INTO A COPYRIGHT PROBLEM? The key here is it's a question of getting the Big Brothers down on you, not a request for more CD hat guys.

I'm sure they could ... but we wouldn't sell them or cast them. Its not about doing something someone already did for us.

glad to see it arrived! Good thing the scale is more or less right too!
and to keep it off topic (!) did any of you see the artwork for an old CCG called guardian? It has some lovely stuff, among which was a something called a king sneeble or something like that. It was a ball of fur with an big silly hat. I always thought it would be so cool to stick a chaos dwarf hat on top of a squig for a king squig. haha!

I think there is no reason to be scared about having a mini with a big hat infringing Grandma Wendy, they don't own big hats.
But thats not really where I would like to see these going. These Chaos dwarves have a unique look, why spoil it by making it conform with other Chaos Dwarves. The size looks spot on also, Cannot wait to see more of these guys!

I agree. My initial post was not to suggest these dwarfs be changed. I think they are excellent and do not think they should be like Grandma Wendy. If I originally sounded as such, I apologize.... was not my intention at all. I would never curb an artist's vision. I will be buying the first 2 for my Grandma Wendy team. Then when the bull centaurs (I'm hoping for 2 different torsos) are cast, I will decide whether or not to sell my Grandma Wendy dwarfs and go all FG dwarves.
I just wondered if there was a guideline or rule of thumb sculptors or even stores use when considering what mini's to produce. And how IP may factor in to the creative process. A debate for another thread...
Again, love the dwarfs the way they are. Excellent work.

the evil dwarves has got a bit of progress as well. missing some arms still though. I worked on the upper half of the boar centuar as well. I thought it might be an idea to make it a bit more feral than the normal dwarves so I gave it normal beard and hair as opposed to the perm curlly ones. Still undecided if that was a good idea....
