Rent the movie "The Last Samurai". The battle scenes show a good number of Samurai Armor. You should be able to get some inspiration from that.
Or you could do a google search for Samurai Armor or "yoroi" (actual Japanese name for armor) or Daimyo armor.

That tattoo idea is cool! I like it!
I have some decal paper and spray adhesive (don't know if it works) but I plan on swiping some lame Japanese tribal tats from tattoo parlor websites and decorating any of these I paint. (the truth is out of 6 teams in my league I will probably end up painting 3 or 4 of them.)
