Hellboy IISaw it last night and it was really good. On par at least with the first one.
Although the ending takes the BPRD in an interesting direction. Not sure if they will follow this direction in the comics or not. At least it will make Hellboy III interesting.

An Abe and Hellboy duet to Barry Manilow. No sh*t! And it brought the house down at my theater.

I'm debating about trying crush into Dark Knight on opening night or just saying F it and wait until Sunday.
One nice thing about my local theater is that they have a "no minors allowed without parents after 9pm" clause so I could go a late show and see it with grown ups only.

That's a good rule, wish the theatres around here did the same thing, but they're just concerned about making money. (which isn't surprising)

Believe it or not the no-kids shows are usually packed! There's a lot of 20 & 30 something's out there that don't want to look at cell phone lights and hear giggling girls.

things to see this summer:
seen:
Iron Man: was ace, sequal will be definitive
Indy IV: never felt guiltier about fancying the leading lady
Forbidden Kingdom: fricking ace as tits. nuff said.
Hancock: i liked it.
to see:
Hellboy II: could join iron man as underrated success story in the wake of batmans latest outing...
Dark Knight: heath ledger with clown makeup. drool.
Tropic thunder: comedy of the summer, if you ask me.
Quantum of Solace: not seen much on this, but have high hopes.
WALL-E: strangely intrigued by this
X-Files: not sure. i sense good things.
Dont mess with the Zohan: either comedy brilliance, or a crass mess. IMHO, adam sandler films are rarely inbetween.
EDIT
also:
Deathrace: remake, looks iffy, but you never know.
Mummy 3: i miss rachael weisz.
The Day the earth stood still: remakes hurt my brain. but THIS one has keanu reeves.

I used to like Wil Smith...now he just bugs me and I don't know why. I'm willing to give this a go but I'm tentative.
| skatingtortoise wrote: | | Dark Knight: heath ledger with clown makeup. drool. |
While I'm not drooling over Ledger (ick) I am anxious. I'm trying like hell not to get too hyped. This has a lot of hype to live up to...unintentional hype but all the same, it's a lot of hype.
| skatingtortoise wrote: | | WALL-E: strangely intrigued by this |
Friends have seen it and they said it was your usual Pixar fare. WALL-E's girlfriend is "lost" (figuratively this time) and he's got to rescue her. To do so he goes on an adventure where he meets a lot of smart talking sidekicks and falls down a lot.
| skatingtortoise wrote: | | X-Files: not sure. i sense good things. |
I know some spoilers about this that would make my wife (the X files fan of the marriage) cringe like hell. Me, I was never into X-files after season one. I liked the original premise with episodes all self-contained and a two sided (believer/skeptic) view on the situation. I had no use for all the other crap. I would have preferred to know very little about the agents. A Dragnet type show about weird stuff was what I was after.
| skatingtortoise wrote: | | Deathrace: remake, looks iffy, but you never know. |
For me, there is very little hope. Why? Well, I'm a huge fan of the original. I love the cheesy gore, the sexy 70's nudity and the sheer silliness of the plot.
I just don't care for Jason Statham. I don't like the Transporter or any of that style of movies.
Add to that stuff the fact that they removed all of the cool things from the movie and left the nondescript stuff. They aren't running over pedestrians in the movie. They don't have crazy cars. There isn't even going to be the gratuitous nudity and misogyny of the first one.
And no Frankenstein! I mean what the hell?
This is Twisted Metal the movie...barely. Not DR2K at all.
| skatingtortoise wrote: | | The Day the earth stood still: remakes hurt my brain. but THIS one has keanu reeves. |
I think the fact that Keanu "Whoah" Reeves is in this movies shows how seriously it's being taken.
Also, no Gort, no Jesus references, not even any real plot similarities to the original at all.
It's another RINO. (Remake In Name Only)

Agreed, the Incredible Hulk was also quite good.
| skatingtortoise wrote: | | Forbidden Kingdom: fricking ace as tits. nuff said. |
I liked this quite a bit as well.
| skatingtortoise wrote: | | Hancock: i liked it. |
I thought this one had a really good story, but I HATED the shaky camera and quick cuts, and the ridiculous panorama 360 shots. Besides the 4 main actors who else was in the movie? I have no clue because of the useless camera work :(

On my list too :D

The lady had girls night in at my house last night, and Zohan was all that was playing in the closest theatre that I hadn't seen. I wish I could say I still hadn't seen it. I think Sandler's best days all happened before Little Nicky or Mr. Deeds, whichever came first. I keep going, spending the $12 on admission, and hoping for 2 hours of hilarity, and leaving feeling like I poisoned my brain.

Saw Hellboy II with my 10yr old daughter yesterday.
It was good, and you could tell that Pan's Labyrinth gave Guillermo some dough - the Troll Market was awesome.
And I'll admit it - I'm a sucker for the sidhe.
The Angel of Death had me flashing back to Pan - a lot. I don't know if it's because it's the same actor (Andy Serkis' Gollum / King Kong had me doing the same thing)
There were a lot of times my daughter and I were cracking up in this one.
All in all, though - it felt a bit rushed. Perhaps there will be additional footage on the DVD. I wish that studios would realize that the "2 hour barrier" has been broken a long, long time. Another 20, 30 minutes would have allowed the romance to bloom a bit more - maybe allow Abe a little time to mourn, and I would have given this 5 Elder Signs.
Babylon A.D. trailer looked... interesting. I haven't read the graphic novel yet, so maybe I won't be disgusted.

City of Ember *does* look interesting...one of the outside bets, lost behind the big names.
also watch out for Star Wars: Clone Wars, trailers look nice, but is this just a squishing together of the TV series?
also couldnt agree more on DR2K - theres no feeling like scoring a race offical/your own mechanic/geriatric nurses
i heart Frankenstein.

AFAIK it's the first three episodes of the upcoming series. According to Wikipedia "[t]he film is intended to precede the animated TV series of the same name to air on Cartoon Network."
Also "Each episode will have a running time of 22 minutes,[4] to fill a half-hour timeslot. Star Wars creator George Lucas says "there will be at least 100 episodes produced." "
And all of this is separate from the live action deal in 2010. Which according to wikipedia "...will focus on minor characters from the Star Wars galaxy, rather than the main characters from the films. However, Lucas has stated that some of the main characters may make cameo appearances. Originally, 100 one hour-long episodes were proposed, but at Celebration Europe in July 2007, producer Rick McCallum explained that it may run up to 400 episodes, and "it’s something that can go on for years and years. One of the ideas is that we’ll have multiple series going on in about two or three year’s time." This supports a description given by Lucas as "one show that will split into four shows, focusing on different characters." and "On the style of the series, McCallum has stated "It is going to be much darker, much grittier, and it's much more character based." Lucas has described the series as "bare-bones" and "action-heavy", and has stated that it will be for more mature audiences like TV shows Battlestar Galactica and Firefly."
Which makes me very optimistic. There's also the fact that Lucas is hiring writers for the show...not writing it himself as he is with The Clone Wars.
Lucas is a great idea man, and with some good writers in his stable we could get some amazing television.

I just saw Hellboy 2, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to say though, having just read a handful of the graphic novels (including the one with the giant sticker on it "Now a major motion picture: Hellboy 2: the Golden Army), that while Del Toro is quite faithful to the characters, pacing and imagery, it had nothing in common with the story. I like what he does but, maybe when they try to cross market, it would be more honest to say "Featuring the characters from the film..." or something to that effect.
As for it looking like Pan's Labyrinth, he's definately developing a visual style, one which I really like :D

It was written by Mike Mignola. Del Toro only wrote the screenplay.
This is all Mignola's ideas. And personally I feel that Del Toro's style fits Hellboy like a glove. Just my humble opinion tho.
One of the things that thrilled me to death about Hellboy II was that somebody had the good sense to say, "Hey, lets make a comic book movie but instead of just redoing an already printed story...lets hire the guy that writes those stories to write a story for the movie."
Whomever had that idea needs to be king of Hollywood.
