Help with gloss varnishI've never made anything shiney, but my present project may have a piece or two I want to use it on.
Give me some pointers with the stuff.
When do I apply it? Can I apply it to just one part of the model? Will my matte overcoat dull it (going back to when to apply it)? Can I paint over it and will the upper layer be glossy or flat?

Just use the varnis when you have finished painting.
Id highly recommend totally varnishing in a Heavy Gloss Varnish as its pretty strong. Then use a product thats called Dullcote to take the shine off the areas you dont want to be shiny. In fact it will almost look like you didnt varnish at all!
I wouldnt recommend painting over Varnish

First look and see if there are other ways to paint a shine on. A painted on shine will look better than a gloss coat. A glossy coat will look wet rather than just shiny. I use it on big gaping mouths, eyes, and anything like that. Sometimes I paint it on gems but only if they're tiny little ones that would be a pain to paint the traditional way.

If you want the surface shiny then it goes on dead last.

If you use a brush on style varnish then yes.

Matte finish will dull it.

I have never tried to paint over it...but i doubt paint would stick to it very well. If you did, your over layer would be flat if you used flat paint.

Oh and one other common sense tip is if you use a brush on style also buy some miner spirits or Gamsol or something and use an old brush. Even a little left on the brush will wreck it.

Thanks for all the tips. Especially the brush ruining heads up, didn't think about that.
I have a fire and cauldron for a master chef token. Figured trying a gloss look to the fire and stew would be a good start.
One final clarification.
The model is painted, highlighted, base finished, and ready for a clear protective coat. I have a spray paint matte varnish and paint-on gloss varnish.
Should I first spray paint matte the figures and then paint on the glossy?

Yes.
And just as my own opinion, I would gloss the stew and not the fire.
