Just saw Iron ManIt's bona fide bad ass.
Really damn good movie. This movie more than any other proves you can please both the fans and the herd at the same time with just a little effort.
Any fan of anything Marvel should go see, and wait for the credits to roll to the end!

Unrelated point, but does anyone else get really annoyed about the mini conversations characters have in a film trailer with dialoge from different parts of the film?!
Might go see the film, I dont know If id appreciate it though, Im not really a comic book kind of guy, but I liked Sin City, which isnt really the same genre!

I bet it will. I am not a major Iron Man fan. I know a couple of his villains, and I know enough to get the subtle sequel hints they dropped and and few other things before they were revealed but other than that I don't know anything about Tony Stark's heart condition, origin story, or his deal with Pepper Potts to know if they did it accurately.
I'm guessing his origin has be at the very least tweaked because it takes place in the Middle East with a bunch of terrorists...although I'm guessing you could probably swap out the words "terrorist" and "cave" for "Communist" and "secret KGB base"...it's just the times we live in.
How much it was changed I can't say, but it worked.
The movie just came together so well that even the subtle sequel hints are virtually invisible to anyone not schooled in the Marvelverse.
Like I said, this movie is evidence that you can remain true to the characters and still have a successful blockbuster. Even more evident than X-men 1 & 2!

have been waiting a long time for this!
all thats left now is watchmen, and my life will be complete.
|
Dark Lord
|
Yeah...unsure on Watchmen.
I want it to be good. I even understand that it's such a deep and layered novel that some of the layers have to left behind for the movie.
I have heard rumors about it and I pray they aren't true but everything that gets confirmed as true leads me down the path of "Oh no..."

This is the first movie produced entirely by Marvel Studios and represents the first time the company has maintained control of their property from concept to screen. The result is a character and story more loyal to the original story. Changes were made to enhance the story rather than to put a particular film makers mark on things.
A Fan Boys delight, I can't wait to see Iron Man myself and I plan to see it on the big screen first!

Like I said, tho. Not just fanboys cuz my wife and sis in law loved it too. They thought it was better than X-men, and Spider-man!
Maybe this will wake studios up to the fact there is a reason the "fanboys" love these stories so much!

I would have bet against an origin story being this good. Saw it Friday and liked it better then the other superhero movies so far.

has anyone seen the teasers to other new marvel films in this one?? apparently the new 'wave' of marvel films will feature crossovers just like in the comics!! in this one you see captain americas shield in starks workshop then after the credits there is a bonus scene lining up the avengers film slated for 2010
|
Dark Lord
|
I didn't see Cap's shield. But I have heard rumors that the same sort of crossover "cameo" happens in the Hulk and will happen in the upcoming Thor movie as well.
The rumor is buzzing saying that all this is leading to a 2012 Avengers film. I think that would kick more ass than a 5 legged man at a Sir Mix-A-Lot show!
|

I saw the shield now that you mentioned it. I thought I saw it during the movie, but noone I was with did so I thought I imagined it. Now I have bragging rights, "I saw it and they missed it". Yah!!

yeah apparently thor is going to cameo in iron man 2 first then have his new film after that, then thats going to be followed by captain america followed by avengers :)
so has anyone seen the extra scene after the credits??
if not :::spoilers::
stark is back in his office, and there is a mysterious guy in shadows behind his desk, he talks to stark about other super heroes that he is recruiting for a super hero team. he steps out of the shadows and introduces himself as nick fury!! (played by samuel L jackson! :D)

Half of the theater waited for that scene. Good choice for Nick too. An Avengers movie has major possibilities. The only question is who are the Avengers? ie What is the teams make-up?

im guessing its going to be the classic line up of cap, ironman, thor, giantman/yellow jacket and the wasp. with the story revolving around cap ironman and thor as they will have there own franchises aswell
|
Dark Lord
|
I think so too but I hope they throw in a few more of the lady Avengers...and stay away from the stupidity of the Ultimates. I can handle an African American Nick Fury...because really what difference does it make and who else could yell like Sam Jackson...but I don't give a squirt about incestuous relationships, Thor as a political activist...or at least left wing loudmouth, Pym's abuse of Wasp, and all that other crap they use as a way to draw controversy.

what im really hoping for, is that Iron Man 2 NEVER sees the light of day.
i want them to go the way of the dark knight, because films with a number tacked on the end annoy me.
i want to see 'Warmachine', or 'Rise of the Mandarin' or some such thing - at the very least Iron Man: the half assed sequel (not actually a half assed sequel, just the add on bit like indiana jones)
on the avengers note, really hope they bring in Warbird

I'm 43, just was into comics at a very early age. At first I hated the red and yellow armor but eventually came to like it. Never cared for the red and silver though.
Daredevil, though, looked much cooler when they switched from the red/yellow to just red.

Yeah Daredevil's red and yellow is like Wolvie's brown outfit.

Definitely a star in Marvel's belt for what they can do when in charge of production.
Now we wait and see if the 2nd Hulk movie can make up for that complete and utter travesty that Ang Lee put out. As a long time reader of the Hulk .... man I almost screamed for what he did to that film.

when did Hulk get to be so big??
I mean, I know when he's mad he goes green and wears pirate trousers, but I reckon the roid-rage stopped when he got to about 8 or 9 feet..
given some recent stuff I have seen he is now holding Cadillacs in the palm of his hand..
and I thought Grandma Wendy had a scale creep problem..
|
Dark Lord
|
Yeah 9 feet is as big as I thought he got but according to the films and perhaps the Ultimates universe (which is what the film versions are iirc) he gets bigger as his rage increases.
|
Dark Lord
|
Actually, if Iron Man is 6 foot-ish then according to this video Hulk is about 12 foot tall. Pause at about 4:04 to see size comparison.
We do indeed have some scale creep...but considering my 5th edition era goblin archers are bigger than my Heroquest Orcs and nearly as tall as the Fimirs then I'd say Marvel is about right on track.
|

Yeah, a guy at gaming this week said the films are based on the Ultimates universe.
So which graphics novels do I need to read now?
As for the Lee Hulk film - once I'd turned off my comics head, it was alright, but it was really hard to swallow the Kong-sized Hulk (ok, a little exaggeration, but not to much!).
Next film - is it Thor or Capt. America?
|
Dark Lord
|
The Ang Lee film had a couple of things I liked:; the comic book panels with simultaneous action shots in them and the machine gun fire rippling all over his skin.
Thor is slated for 2010
The First Avenger: Captain America is due 2011
Ant Man is also due 2010
There is also an IMDB entry for the Avengers in 2011.
As far as the Ultimates comics...I wouldn't bother with them. WHile there are some good ideas in the reboots the comics are plagued with phoney induced controversy. Sort of a "hey look at us!" type of thing where they are just dying for some Christian or parent group to get wind of it and protest so they can get sales up.
Low points include incest between Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, Tony Stark sex video, gay Colossus dating Northstar...the list goes on and on.
Marvel is at a low point. I haven't seen writing and art this horrible since the early to mid nineties at Image.

Stout Youngblood

I have to agree with you about the Ultimates and some of the issues used with the X-Men but I have to say I am really, Really, REALLY enjoying Ultimate Spiderman.

Think we can talk Hasbro into buying Marvel at the same time as Grandma Wendy?

Rumour has it, it was done to create a buzz to secure financing for the film.

I thought it was bad enough when he hung up his shield back in the mid 70s. Wife brought home the trade paperback on the 'civil war', read it and gave it back to her saying it was total cr@p. Comics are escapism not this.

| Stout Youngblood wrote: | Comics are escapism not this. | Funny I said the same thing many years ago when to my local comic store owner when I canceled my monthly reserved copies for Spider-Man. I did this right after the issue where he hit his wife (Mary Jane). I didn't read comics to see Spider-Man be a wife beater (don't really care what the excuse was). Never purchased another Spider-Man comic again until the reboot when I picked up my kids some of the early issues when he first meets Sandman or Doc Oct because my kids thought the movies were cool.
On a side note ... after that issue Spider-Man (referenced above) sales went down 20% in the next 3 months ... it was such a huge decrease in readership that the Wall Street Journal did a front page story on it ... alluding to the fact that it was possible to push even a comic reader "too far". I was happy to see I wasn't the only person who drew the line somewhere.

had to post this:
i just started working as a volunteer for the national trust in Bath (england), and theres a local cat known to the rest of the team as nelson, due to his one working eye.
but as he's jet black (and only has ONE EYE) i refuse to call him anything but NICK FURY (insert samuel l jackson quote here)
just thought id tell you that.

The black Nick Fury never bothered me (though I'm not saying it bothered you either) because his skin color doesn't really define the character and after I heard about Sam Jackson playing him I thought, "That's perfect!" I can see Sam shouting orders already. He'll be like a black R Lee Ermey.
