League play

In order to encourage league play and set up a flexible system to account for coaches with time constraints and differing amounts of test, here is an idea.

Okay: open league: each team can play as many games/test as they want, cannot play the same coach for more than 2 consecutive games or 6 total tests in a row (which ever is the less).  Games may be to 1, 2, or 3 goals in this format, however must be agreed upon before the game starts.

Point standing in the league is taken into account by adding up all the goals score and multiply by the goal percentage (the goal percentage is calculated by taking total goals scored and dividing by the number of test played) Example: a team has scored 12 goals in 18 tests by playing 8 games.  The number of games doesn't matter, but the number of tests does.  Take 12 and multiply by 12/18 (12 * .6666) and the total league points are 8.  Then compare to others and determine you place.  This tries to keep the weight of things equal instead of a 1 test game being equal in standing weight to a 3 or 5 test game.

Sounds kind of complicated at first, but I think this would make things fairly even.  There could be other multipliers as well, but this is pretty straight forward once you get the math done.

Then have the semi finals be required to be to 2 goals and the final be an all out maybe to 3 goals or to win by 2 goals whichever comes first (this though might favor attrition tactics so maybe keep it at just 2 goals for the final.)

Then as a bonus for the semifinals all players in a semifinal get 1 experience point.  And for the final all players get 2. The winners get extra by virtue of the fact that they scored more goals. So there are no specific extras for them.

Also I was thinking this setup would lend itself to preseason games of one test that might have some other tangible benefit for the team.

So what do you think, any suggestions additions to this idea?

Also I would be curious are there any leagues out there yet and how do you have the standings/playoffs set up?

I run a league.

It only meets once a month however and my move slowed it down even more.

All we are doing is playing scheduled matches once a month for 10 months. and then 2 months of single elimination playoffs.

However, any and all exhibition matches count for experience. If two coaches decide to play a game they keep the Goal Points earned, but the matches themselves do not count for win/loss record and league standings.

That is actually a really good idea. "Play all you want, and improve your team, but only sanctioned matches count". I really like that.

Yep and with Elfball's point cap it works really well, because a coach that has played 20 matches can still be beat by a coach who has played only 5.
