My other hobby - Another place to spend money I don't have.

I was out the other night observing and caught these images of a Jovian transits the bigger dark spot is the shadow of callisto, the smaller one is ganeymede blocking the light from Jupiter.  Astronomy can make collecting minatures look cheap.

Oh Yah!!  I gave that one up years ago because I was young, poor and it cost money - lots.  Especially if you want'd to take great photos, and I did.

Looks really nice!!

I would LOVE to get into that hobby. I am a sucker for all things astronomy...except the math!    Those are great pics!!

10x50 binoculars and a lounge chair aren't too much.  And there's plenty of astronomy you can do with that equipment.

And now you've gotten me started on how simple it is to make your own telescopes.

You could have a nice 4" dobsonian for around $150 if you buy the secondary mirror, cheaper yet if you make it yourself (although optical flats are a pain to do).

Having friends in the machine shop at work helps keep the price down, too. :)

Lenses aren't cheap, but you rarely need anything high powered.

And digital SLRs have come way down in price in recent years.

PM me if you would like to discuss this further.  (I wrote a super-simple, ugly, mirror making primer about 10 years ago - should still be on the intertubes somewhere...)
