Beholder

Okay, I found some sculpey while I was cleaning and whipped this up...

I know the lighting is bad, I just took a snapshot while it was on my table. I didn't light it or even adjust the camera...shame on me.

Gonna add some green stuff eye stalks (9?) and some helmet spikes.
I also want to add some spiky teeth to the mouth (at least some you can see because there are actually teeth in there.)
darktremere

"Just whipped this up" After seeing what you can just whip up makes me want to put away my procreate before I embarass myself.

Looks very good, needs 10 eyestalks. Are you thinking of having them come out through small holes in the helmet? The sharp pointy teeth will really help the look, right now it sort of looks like he's gumming it, like a babies pacifier. At least that's my first impression, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Dark Lord

Yeah they will poke out through holes in the helmet...well "holes" I won't actually cut holes but yeah.

Although I thought beholders had 9 eye stalks and the 10th anti-magic cone came from the big frontal eye? You're gonna make me get out my monster manual aren't you?

At any rate Beholders are the IP of Wizards of the Coast so this will be an Eye Lord, or an "Ock Jock"

Thanks for your kind words.
GalakStarscraper

DL,

Your sculpting is VERY good for a starter.

However I didn't say anything to my wife and her comment was "honey that's obsene ... why does he have a penis coming out of his mouth"

I informed her it was a football ... and she just shook her head and walked away.

The football in the mouth I have to admit doesn't quite do it for me. However ... I do really like the idea of us casting an Eye Lord in a football helmet. Sounds fun.

If you are doing this for yourself ... its very very cool ... go for it man!!!!

If you wee thinking about it for Targeted ... I'm try for the mean zap'em style without the ball but with the helmet.
=====

So to be clear ... that's AWESOME work for an beginning sculpt. So you have my compliments!!!

Galak

**Tom's wife has a dirty mind!**

Anyway, I think it's the picture. I was actually pretty proud of the football, but looking at the pics through your wife's eyes it does look strange. Maybe it's the color? I don't know but I'm pretty sure once it's painted brown with a white stripe there won't be any questions.

Um, I hadn't really thought about WHY I was doing it...just that the idea made me laugh and I found some sculpey when I was cleaning up.

I have no experience with mini sculpting beyond using a little greenstuff for conversions. I have worked with clay sculpture quite a bit in the past and I think I'm pretty good, but that was on a larger scale and only nudes from life, no clothing.

I have wanted to start sculpting for some time but haven't had the time. Once I get myself employed I plan on buying the Reaper sculpting skeletons and giving it a go. For now this is probably just to amuse myself.

But if enough people like it maybe I'll make one for Targeted Impact.

If I were to make some stuff for Targeted:

1. How do I get a mold made?

2. What is "Zap'em" style?

3. Is sculpey okay or do I need to stick to green and brown stuff?

4. What if I wanted the stalks to be seperate pieces? Do I need to consider that for the molding process?

5. Is there a link that answers these questions that I am too lazy to look for?
fatgoblin

I love the ball in the mouth! The surface detail on the skin might be a bit too over done though. Thats great work on the helmet btw, wow!
Dark Lord

Heh thanks...but them helmet isn't mine. It's copped from a gum ball machine NFL helmet. Kansas City Chiefs...the red matches the coral colored sculpey.

So anyone who wants to take back their compliments, I don't mind.
Rabid_Bogscum

so really your just responsible for a piece of coral with an eyeball and penis..

seriously though, I think its pretty cool
Hoomin_erra

Have to admit, my first thought was the same as Tom's wife, then i looked again. The other thought is.........

When the hell am i gonna use that????
Norse

1) nice sculpting

2) platic helmet might be an issue for us to cast in terms of melting and also plaigarism

3) definitely looks like a bell-end..

Wouldn't a Beholder (even if called a Eye Lord) be breaking D&D IP?

Nope. NUMEROUS companies have made beholder knock-offs.

DL ... PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a pack of ProCreate as I don't think the sculpy would work for casting and Ramsay is definitely right after the plastic helmet melting during casting. So that would not work.

As for how would I use this figure. My first thought was I've always wanted to make (even before Impact!) a human team based on Wizards. ... This would be a great Ogre for that team.

Really?

Was that a case of TSR (when they existed) being lax in trademarking them, or just they were a nicer company than Grandma Wendy?
GalakStarscraper

Darkson wrote:

I believe it to be this one.

I think TSR took more the stand-point of that they were selling the books and anyone willing to make miniatures was just helping them sell books.

Pretty much the opposite of Grandma Wendy who uses books to sell minis. And when the mini sales slow they make new books to try to sell more minis.

Impact! takes care of all the moulding.

Use ProCreate. PM me your address and I'll send you a pack.

Your best bet would be to create a sprue with the stalks and then just make sure there is a good way for it to all join together. It all depends on how you make the stalks. If they are going every direction they need to be sprued seperate .. if they are sculpted to flow with the mould they can be part of the original sculpt. The best way is to picture the two part mould having liquid rubber flowing around your figure. Is there a piece that is at an angle that won't lift out? If so then it probably needs to be a seperate piece.

No really. There is a real good Yahoo group for sculptors ... but beyond that its hit or miss.

Okay cool.

So, I'll finish the sculpey version and learn what I can from it.

I do agree that the skin is overdone. The Procreate version may look more traditional because I won't be using the plastic helmet.

At any rate, thanks!
Dark Lord

Grandma Wendy?

Is that the filter or just silliness? Either way it's hilarious!

Grandma Wendy...nope not the filter... [edit .. well now it ... ... Galak]

you're funny Darkson!
Darkson

Yep, Grandma Wendy, as opposed to my other grandma, Granda (Deceased) Wilma

(Just doing my bit to make sure impact! don't get any threating letters from the old Big Bad. )
Sallacious

clever
GalakStarscraper

Maybe I should add that to the filter ... sounds good to me.

If you are going to sculpt the stalks seperates, you might want to drill holes into the helmet so that its easy to sttach them later (and will probably) look nicer.

If you want to cast sculpty (and/or plastic) you will need to use RTV rubber

Wonder who will let you field the monster though!
Darkson

Test (Grandma Wendy).

Well I don't really play that other game anymore but if I did it would be a Chaos Troll. I've never been satisfied with the big guys for Chaos. They never seemed Chaotic enough for me...in fact the entire Chaos team seems rather bland for Chaos? I have said several times that the big guy for Chaos should be a Spawn. It should basically be a guy who mutates more often than not, moves like a goblin with a ball & chain, and can't carry the ball. But my changes to the Chaos team are for another forum.

For Elfball, who knows? Like Galak said, an ogre for a wizard team.

Oh and what is RTV rubber?
darktremere

For that other game, use him for a coach. He used his charm person/monster ray to build himself a team. Leave the football out of his mouth and give him a cigar to chew on while he's cussing out the ref.
Dark Lord

Oh man!

A Beholder referee!!! Nothing gets by old 10 Eyes!

Give him a whistle and a cap instead of a helmet.
Lychanthrope

I thought the whole idea of a beholder was dumb, but the more I see the idea fleshed out the more it grows on me. I do like the idea of a beholder as a coach or referee.

A beholder as a player: I like the helmet (add some spikes, forget that I can add my own spikes), but I like my players to look more NFL then that fantasy battle game. Never understood why zombies would still be in grave clothes. Raise zombie, "here put this on", zombie puts uniform on, head to the field.
GalakStarscraper

Could work as a referee ... especially if the eyes were made to look in all directions.

I think I'd rather have the fierce look and the whistle hanging from a couple eye stalks where he could get to it with the stalks sticking through the ref cap.

This is exactly what I was thinking...okay...I'm making this fig.

I'm gonna work on the skin texture and the style will be more like what you suggested if I don't have to worry about a helmet.

I'm pumped!

Room Temperature Vulcanizing rubber. Usually Silicone Rubber, uses acetic acid (vinegar) to vulcanize the rubber. Commonly used as Caulk in the United States. Also used to make molds for spin-casting white metal.

Darkson

Love the ref idea, though I want on as a player as well.

Oh, and the coach sounded a laugh to.....

Dammit DL, do all three.
fatgoblin

To expand on the RTV thing, yup it stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing. the key point being exactly that. The mould making process normally used for making metal miniatures vulcanises the mould rubber at high tempratures. Ok for epoxy putty like green stuff and pro-create, but will melt plastics and sculpty.

Most people use it to make moulds for resin casting.

The first time I came across this rtv thing was reading it on Hirst website. A pretty nice and easy to follow explanation of what it is all about
http://www.hirstarts.com/moldmake/moldmaking.html

An expensive alternative is to use that to make a mould. Then cast a master using a special resin that can restand high temperature. And than use that resin master to make the mould for mass metal reproduction.
Dark Lord

So many projects!

I feel like I'm back in school! Arrgh!

Well I have been wanting to learn miniature sculpting for some time. Like I said, I have sculpted before...just not tiny and not for molds.

But I also planned on setting up a screen printing operation over the summer. I have the basics already and I figured I could offer you guys T-shirts at a lower price than you can get online...and still make a decent profit for me! (Overseas, I don't know because shipping might wipe out the savings)

So now I have, sculpting to learn, T-shirts to make, minis to paint, and I'd like to see if I could throw together some pdf reference cards for Elfball.
On top of all that I have to get a job (ACK!) and we are trying to move to a house or duplex. (our charming little apartment has lost its charm and is now just little...plus our new neighbors put the trash in white trash.)
Lychanthrope

I was thinking some more about these and thought that if you made 12 or so eye stalks on a spruce then had 3 different heads you could easliy come up with a variety of different looking heads.
Babs

I have only one thing to say about the Beholder:

IGMEOY! LOL!
fatgoblin

btw, someone linked to this picture on the Forum of doom,

Dark Lord

God that would be a cool Elfball team!
lahatiel

Nice! The dark grey one in the back, just right of center, is an oooold Ral Partha model -- I've had that one laying around unpainted for probably 15 years or so.

Thread Necromancy:  OK DL hows the sculpt coming for the Beholder referee?
Dark Lord

Terrible.

In my arrogance I figured "I'm an artist and a sculptor, I should be able to sculpt minis!" I was wrong.

I need to start with some simple humanoid shapes first.

In the secret weapon rules that I created I made referees of Goblins, Dwarves, Humans, Elves and Beholders. Elves and Beholders are the only ones without minis from either Grandma Wendy or Impact. I may try to do the elf first.

But before I do that I plan on doing some simple humans/elves with weapons. I can do it, I just need to work with the stuff first and practice.
And for me that's really the most frustrating part. I don't like learning new media! I remember when I hated charcoal. I didn't know how to use it, and I just hated it...but after a couple months of practice I didn't want to use anything else.

So stay tuned. It will come...probably by the time Tom releases secret weapon rules!

It takes some to admit to stuff like this.  Good Luck on the artistic growth issues.
Dark Lord

Classical art training is more about learning to critique your own work than it is about learning techniques.

And that's both ways. It's probably harder to learn to see the good parts of your own "bad" work.
