Ogre Work in Progress (Updated 03 July 08)Way back in the dark ages I purchased some Ogre minis from Dark Lord (He had another name then and has had several since ) with the intention of creating my own unique Ogre team. The death of my wife and the depression that followed pretty much put the brakes on my work in progress for a very long time. Recently my drive rekindled, I broke down and finaly got some reading glasses and I have launched back into things.
When I left off in 2004 I had not gotten very far. I continued to buy the Ogre minis as I found ones I liked but I did no work on the team. This is the Grandma Wendy Ogre Merchant (Edit: This is actualy a Mordhiem Ogre Bodyguard) in the early stages of conversion, spring 2004.
To that point it had been a cake walk, loose the backpack & purse, reposition the arm, remove the club and opened up the hand for the ball. But the green stuff, while fun, was not as easy as I had hoped. He remained pretty much unchanged until a few weeks ago. I discovered that final shaping green stuff is MUCH easier when it is hard and dry cause you can work it like wood or metal. I got the jump on several other pieces and suddenly the project has inertia again!
The Goldfag is an easy conversion, and he could have simply been painted and placed on the pitch, but I wanted to change him from ordinary, all his changes are minor and simple.
The Ogress is from Eastern Front I showed the original on the left above and right below, so you see the changes in the Ogress on the right. The pewter base was all cut away but for a piece left to fit a slot slot base. Football armor was added (Still very much in the rough) and she was given a leather helmet to match the thrower. I have not decided yet for certain, but she may get a "Catchers Mit". The other Ogress will eventualy become a cheerleader. The throwers armor has been improved now and details like straps added.
Finaly a closer back shot, she is gonna require a lot of work to bring the armor into shape, but I was trying for full shoulder/back/tailbone type coverage.
So it is obvious that I will never sculpt proffessionaly, but I am having fun with it again and in the next few months I hope to post further pics as things progress!
Cheers and thanks for looking!

I said it then and I'll say it now, I just freakin' love that mordheim ogre conversion!
Waaaaaaaay down the bench I have an ogre standard bearer that I intend to convert to a down marker holder. He has a big knife that I wanna put measurement markings on and a bloody finger.
Don't doubt your skills. These look great! Especially for a beginner.
Heck, I have a degree in art and have been sculpting (with clay) almost as long as I have been painting and I still get frustrated with green/gray/brown stuff. I wanna do this beholder ref so bad, but I really think I need to start with some basic humanoids first. You'd think I ball with eyes would be easy. YOu'd be wrong.
I can't wait to see the progress on these. They look great. Are you planning on using them for that nasty other game or for Elfball?

I love him too, the simple arm relocation just makes him perfect. Patching up the spaces where the basket backpack and the purse give him a funky look, but I am thinking that paint will resolve that.
As for the game? Well I have at least 12 unique Ogres now so once they are done there is no reason that I can't use them for both games!
With my next Impact! order I will have enough Scarecrows & Pumpkin Heads to make 16 uniques as well!

Impressive work. The thrower is fine. Perhaps you could add some spikes to make them look more dangerous, but they are pretty ok so far. The ogress by the way, you should file them a little bit. You gave me some ideas

OK got an update. . .
Here we have our first group shot, only one of the final team is absent These are all just rough yet. Soon most of them will be sporting leather helmets (note the hair has been ground off of most of them shown below) and greenstuffed joints & part seams to smooth up the various parts from different sources. I Have a number of 2nd edition Ogres, but sadly they are all small and mostly out of scale compared to they guys.
The Morg'n Thorg pieces combine well with the Heresy pieces allowing me to make many unique combos, heads, lower torsos and posable arms just flat rock!
The Morg on the right was one of Erics conversion projects, he relocated the left arm into a more open stance before he sold it to me.
Unfortunately, I am missing one set of Heresy arms, I don't know if I lost them or if they were never here, but somehow I need to come up with more, and maybe a second set for customising another mini.
The Morg Lower & Heresy Upper make for a seriously forward leaning badass look, like he is ready to bury his head or shoulder in someones gut!
The Ogress has been trimmed and is ready for her second round of Greenstuff. The Resin Ogre is a Fenryll Half Ogre Adventurer, his base & weapons have been removed.
I am having a lot of fun with these guys! Next update should see smoother seams and better greenstuff details! (I hope!)

They are looking great, man!

Thank you sir! I am sure you recognise many of them as Ogres I bought from you way back when.
Finaly admitting I need them and then getting reading glasses has made messing with minis fun again rather than the (eyestrain induced) headache it was becoming.

I'm stubborn as hell too. I just got done explaining to Norse that it took me nearly killing myself to admit I had sleep apnea.

Ogre Work in Progress (update 3 July 08)Well things are still moving along, slowly, but moving. Trying to get things shaped up and tucked in by increments. Having a groupd of minis to convert helps prevent me from working any one piece to death, I can set it aside to cure and work on another. Though truthfully I still fall into the trap of trying to do much at once.
It is impossible to mix SMALL amounts of green stuff, no matter what I mix too much and usualy waste more than I use, blending seams really doesn't use much at all, thread size strands really.
These guys all have Morg upper torsos but note that each has a different left arm pose. The guy in the middle has the stock pose with the hand curled tightly into the wrist and arm. The one on the left Eric opened up, his wounds have been green stuffed. The one on the right had the hand removed with a jewlers saw at the cuffline and replaced with one of the many spare Heresy hands.
I like the resulting pose. You can see I have built up a ring of green stuff to repair the cuff, it will be trimmed down when it dries.
Here we have the Ogress in second phase, I was not happy with the back armor or first knee pads so I am redoing them. I also discovered I had damaged her feet worse than I had realised in removing the original base, she now has new soles on her feet and an oversize heal that will be shaped down. The Fenryl mini is coming along nicely too, while I am not fond of resin I gotta admitt it is easy to cut, file and shape, and the green stuff really loves it too, they seem made for each other. Here is his first rough in.
I am striving for the leather helmet look, it takes several green stuff sessions and lots of filing to get them down thin and clean. I even considered naming the team "The Leather Heads" as inspired by the movie. Four of them actually have metal helmets (Three of those horned) and I will leave those be.
This guy is my one favorites with his forward leaning pose he is hard to see so I set up this shot from slightly below. Sadly when I went to stand up I bumped the table. He fell off the phone book to the floor and broke every single glue joint. I may end up having to pin him together.
Combining the Morg parts with the Heresy parts is a great way to make some fairly unique minis, I am tempted to try my hand at sculpting a new torso design for even more poses. For me these provide more interesting variety than the multipart humans.
Thats it for now, I will update as things progress!
