Painting the new Deadwoods

Hi all!
Im very happy as Galak has trusted me an importand mission (at least it is for me), to paint the brandnew Deadwoods. I started today with the "cleaning" of the minis and the imprimation.
Tomorrow i will start both the minis and i will show you all the progress!
CYU tomorrow!

Basic done.... Im aming to paint them in 2 diferent colours... more to come!

Lychanthrope

I wouldn't have thought of green, but now that I see it I'm curious to see how it turns out.  A white to grey color scheme would also be doable.  Like a sycamore tree.

No that's brilliant! Trees are always half covered in moss! As an undercoat I bet it will work very well!
Dan Titan

When I asked Galak about the colours, he said "its up to you".... So I thought to start doing something different... Also, and after checking some painting guides, Im thinking in making the eyes of the one on the right with some king of "Glow"... Ill keep you posted... (probably on monday!)

I have some glow in dark paint from Ral Partha. It's (almost) invisible in daylight but when the lights are out it glows pretty nicely.

he's using oils.
Norse

Bob Ross would have nailed these figs in a few seconds..

and he would have used just the least little pthalo blue..

I miss Bob Ross, he made 20 minutes seem to last forever..
Dark Lord

Bob Ross...friend to squirrels and enemy of fine art.
Norse

that's a little harsh.. just because he reduced the works of the "great" masters to dabs of a 6" brush covered in different colours..

if you think Bob's an enemy of fine art, try Rolf Harris...
Dark Lord

Yelch. That guy is a joke!

I have a fairly narrow view of what constitutes "fine" art and an extremely broad view of what should be considered applied art, or visual art.

Hope you're not talking about Rolf!

You missed the detail painting and highlighting of the creepy crawlies on the inside of the mini Deadwood.

Galak
Norse

probably because I DON'T HAVE ONE!!
Dark Lord

UNless this one is way different than mine you can't see very much on the inside of the tree.

Well I did use the skull filler.

yikes. sorry.

I was just giving feedback.

i just didnt think that 'i could paint it faster' was exactly constructive.

if there is some other type of comradery i did not know about, sorry for butting in.
Norse

me and Dan go back 6 years mate, we're allowed to bust each others chops...

and you and me go back 1 year, which means I can bust your chops too ya shrunken wookiee!

feel free to bust back..

Indeed a good one... but I try to give out always my best... and im testing to get the best posible result, and the glowing eyes are a good thing so far... but need to get the correct mixture for the rest...
Dan Titan

Norse

oh.. so the green is meant to look as if it is glowing.. OK, got that now..

not to my personal tastes.. I see what you are trying to do, but to me it just looks like you were careless when you painted the eyes..
Dark Lord

I think to give a better glow effect the painted light source should be lighter than the reflected light and fade out more.

Also the the other cracks in the tree should show the glow.

Try to mimic Victoria Lamb's techniques...if you can.

That is so effective it's just sick Fantastic stuff!
Dark Lord

I know. Victoria Lamb is insanely talented...makes me want to break my brushes and cry.
GalakStarscraper

Fortunately for us ... we got her to do the Pharaohs.

Unfortunately for us ... she decided to open her own miniatures business instead of doing any more work for others.

Galak

Hey Dan,

I like the effect you are going for ... but I think its too much on the outside trunk.  I'm thinking it needs to be lighter (kinda to echo Dark Lord's thoughts).  I'm almost thinking a good brown wash needs to go over the green that is on the trunk to make the inset green pop out more.

Galak
SillySod

Dan, I think one problem with the glow effect around the eyes is that some of the area that is lighted isnt actually a surface that the glow would reflect from. I'd just reduce the amount of green around the eyes and teeth a bit.
Dan Titan

Thanks for the critics... thats what i was looking for since the begining... But after watching closely Vicīs paintings i nearly throwed all of mine through the window...

Will try to get it better...

Hi Dan,

Was wondering if there was a timeline for having images for our store's website of these guys.

Guess I need to be more clear with folks in the future.

When I say no rush we don't have an immediate timeline for them ... that means I'm hoping to see something within 4 to 5 weeks.

No worries ... looking forward to seeing the finished product.
