Sculpting FacesHi all
I have just started sculpting some female figures and seen to have the body, arms. legs figured out.
The faces have me stumped.
I have had a few goes but just can not get a face to look anything like a human female.
Anyone know of a good tutorial for doing faces?
Cheers

You may want to check out Hasslefree for this to start with. They sell a female head sprue that they allow for basic setups.
Looking this over you might get some pointers are basic starting points for the female head.

if all else fails sculpt a helmet.. also a lot easier to paint..

I knew I had seen some heads sprues some where around the traps, just could not find it in all the miniature links. As soon as I read Hasslefree I knew where I saw them.
I might just have to go over and order me some of them, and some of their naked ladies.
I am pretty sure once I have some I will figure out how to make one for my self. If all else fails I can just stick one of them on.
Thanks for the direction.

Half the fun in sculpting a mini is (for me) sculpting the face. There's a couple of tutorials about on the net - I'll try to find one for you A lot more fun than buying a pre-made one.

Nice tutorial from Ebob -
Male faces

Slightly more difficult to find a female face tutorial but this one from Ramon Lann (using a Steve B sculpt as the tut) will give you a great grasp of the basics for most sculpts using the female form.

Re:Face TutorialAll the fun of sculpting is getting this sticky green *#$% to do what you want and then stay there.
Nice tutorials, I have seen the one from Puty N Paint, the other one is really helpfull as it shows green stuff being used.
 I think I might be trying to do it when the green is too freshly mixed.
I have fast setting putty here I use for bases, Sellys KneadIt Aqua, dries rock hard and pure white in 45 minutes.
I am going to try using some of that a little later, when the boy is a sleep, might even go up in scale 54mm until I get a good shape happening.
The added pressure of the time frame might even help, I work well under pressure.
I have ordered some heads from hasslefree, more for reference, I really want to get this part sorted. it is a major hurdle that needs to be overcome. Practice Practice Practice
I got the newest two girls as well, the ones laying down, the harem horde grows
I shall keep at it, thanks for the tutorials again

For me the Hasslefree heads really helped as a great reference since hair and all that is left of and that makes it easier to see the shape than on most miniatures.
Also "Drawing the human face" by Burne Hogarth has been valuable since he explains everything on the various planes of the face and so forth.
Good luck!

Er, the above link to the step-by-step doesn't work for me.. is the site down or is my machine faulty?

Try this (not sure if it still works)

Edit: but then I just found out that the original link now works for me. Yay!

I'll make a tutorial of my way of doing faces (quite different from all other tutorials I've seen in fact) once I learn how to take decent pictures. So that means you'll probably just have to wait some ten years or so

Ha, I SO new that!
the interesting thing about the above tutorial was to see how a face can be actually sculptedas opposed to modelled. So far, I've tried adding on material (in the form of brows, noses etc.) instead of removing material (which constitues the act of "sculpting"). Learning is fun!

Sculpting is an art composed of two methods; adding and subtracting. I wouldn't say that one is MORE sclpting than the other. All methods are useful for different purposes. Sometimes I see people viewing cutting, filing and sanding the sculpt after curing as somehow LESS sculpting to (and more "modelling"). WHY? It's all a way of achieving the desired result which is what sculpting is about.

Added to my favourites. That's one excellent face sculpting tutorial. People keep asking for those all the time and from now on this is what I will direct them to.

Thats really cool, cheers for posting it.
Does any one know how to save it? I just downloaded it twice but it is still not on my pc

Be carefull. Adding or taking off material are 2 different paths young padawan !
Adding is easier I think if you work with Fimo.

I use greenstuff, not fimo. I've found out that adding things to faces makes them too big and "comical" : exaggerated noses and brows. And eyes simply cannot be added.. at least not by me.
Curently, I am only adding hair and try to press/cut the rest. Man, I suck at this.

I do eyes like this:
1. Eyeball in deep set socket, let set (I do the eyeball in a different colour from the rest of the face to make it easier to see what I'm doing)
2. Add upper eyelid, let set though not fully, cut and trim, then let set
3. Add lower eyelid and use this piece of putty for the defining/finetuning of the cheekbones.
I use the same technique for 10 mm figures. So it's not much of a problem I think.
I used to make upper and lower eyelid, leaving a hole between them, which I then filled up with the "eye". This - unfortunately - is painfully obvious in the closeup of my vampire sculpt as small blobs of the "eye" ended up a bit outside of the eyelids. I think that is only noticeable in such a large closeup though.

no it doesn't work anymore, I did a lot of change on my site, but I made a new page with it as some people seems to find it usefull:
http://perso.orange.fr/sylvain.quirion/tutorial/heads.htm
I'm not working exactly like that anymore but it's probably a good start to find your own techniques

Hi Sylvain, nice to see you here. Thanks for sharing some tips with us!

Hi Ewan, I've been occasionnaly lurking here since you gave me the link but only registred now...
I'm impressed by what you guys did with Impact in only a few month

Trying to work hard
Thanks for the kind words, perhaps we can get in a position to talk properly sometime about sculpts etc?
|
Sylvain

goblinforge's boss would probably kill me for that (not that he dislike other companies but I would have less time for sculpting his minis ) but why not? you've got my email address if you need it someday

Perhaps I should communicate with Goblin Forge to make sure I am not stepping on anyones toes.

if you mean discussing about models so you don't produce the same it's a good idea, if it's just to discuss about me he'll probably just say a lot of bad things about me and dealines

Nearly all sculptors are the same my friend!
Yeah, I think a chat with them would be cool to make sure we work beside each other, not trying to make the same minis We've tried to help them out before by trying to help promote any minis etc here, so I'd like to continue in the same way for the future.

our clients should be happy that we work on our models until they are perfects rather than rushing them for the deadline

The only one we've ever rushed was because he wanted paid up front for the work ... promised a delivery time ... and missed it by about 4 weeks.

I wish that was the case. For me it's more a matter of getting distracted by other projects once the figure is 80% done.
The first 80% usually takes four days or so. The remaining 20% about three months....

Here's a few tips from a self-confessed novice:
1. Use vegetable oil on your tools so the 'green stuff' doesn't stick. It's also useful for smooth surfaces - like a woman's cheeks.
2. Sculpt a 'skull' first (a lump in the middle) and then sculpt over it. That way the green stuff doesn't squish out of shape while sculpting.
3. Do small amounts at a time.
.. See? I can sound like an expert when I have a completely unproven record...
