Team FlavorsI am thinking of trying Elfball and wanted to know what are the strengths and weaknesses of each team and any particular characteristics that stand out for each. Also what are 2 or so good starting teams to learn the game with?

For a starting team, I recommend skipping one with a monster. They tend to be a bit slow and if you are trying to be reactive can hold you back. Also they can't be in the face-off. But if you've got your heart on the gnomes or the valks, go for it
I think that Black Widows are a good starting team. Agressive and skilled team. Divine Wind is a nice straight up human team. Gnolls are good for the beginner as well.
I will give you a better answer later. I've been wanting to write a small thing about each team anyways. I'm not an expert. In fact I spend more time writting the vassal mod than playing the game, but I'm not scared to put ideas out there so the better players can comment on it.

Mad Jackal went MIA on us ... I think he's played many of the races now and I'd love his thoughts.
For a rookie MJ has said me at GenCon that the Divine Wind and Gnoll teams were both very good starting teams. Having 3 or more Tackle 4 players with at least 2 Skill 4 players gives you a nice starting basis for a team. With the Divine Wind you are getting the benefit of the slow up powerful Defenders and with the Gnolls instead of Defenders you have the very fast Safeties.
If I understood MJ correctly the Timberline Elf team was one of his favourites. He love the effect the Dryads had on the game. And many folks have praised the effect of the Widowmaker on the game.

Not MIA. I'm here. More "muzzled" though.
Long story short:
This past 3 months I've had huge restrictions on my internet access that should be pretty much resolved now. I've lots to say on this subject and many others but no ability to post more than say 30 words at a time.
more later.

To help see the teams and how they stack up ... I took all 17 Official teams and the 2 Optional teams and put them into a spreadsheet to determine the average for each attribute. I then found the top 3 (allowing for ties) in each stat and the bottom 3 and here is how they end up:
2 more top 3 than bottom 3:
1) Thunder Hammer Dwarves (Top 3 in Might, Tackle, Skill, and Grit / Bottom 3 in Jog and Dodge)
1 more top 3 than bottom 3:
1) Tanezumi (Top 3 in Jog and Skill / Bottom 3 in Might)
Even top 3 and Bottom 3:
1) Night Elves (Top 3 in Jog, Dodge and Skill / Bottom 3 in Might, Tackle and Grit)
2) Deadlings (Top 3 in Might, Tackle and Grit / Bottom 3 in Jog, Dodge and Skill)
3) Gnolls (Top 3 in Jog / Bottom 3 in Skill)
4) Pharaohs of Vihktora (Top 3 in Skill / Bottom 3 in Might)
5) Black Rock Dwarves (Top 3 in Tackle / Bottom 3 in Dodge)
6) Timberline Elf (Top 3 in Dodge / Bottom 3 in Tackle)
7) Desert Dogs (Top 3 in Grit / Bottom 3 in Tackle)
No Top 3 or Bottom 3:
1) Sarcos
2) Valkyries
3) Middle Kingdoms
4) Siringit
5) Divine Wind
6) Orcs
One more Bottom 3 than Top 3:
1) Gnomes (Top 3 in Might and Dodge / Bottom 3 in Jog, Skill and Grit)
2) Black Widows (Top 3 in Skill / Bottom 3 in Might and Grit)
3) Razorbacks (Bottom 3 in Skill)
4) Samhaino (Bottom 3 in Skill)
====================================
And then the best 2 and worst 2 in each to help:
Jog:
Best - Night Elves (6.67) and Tanezumi (6.5)
Worse - Deadlings (4.0) and Gnome/Thunder Hammer Dwarves (5.0)
Might:
Best - Thunder Hammer Dwarves (4.0) and Deadlings (3.83)
Worst - Night Elves (2.33) and Tanezumi (2.67)
Tackle:
Best - Thunder Hammer Dwarves, Deadlings, and Black Rock Dwarves (4.0)
Worst - Timberline Elves and Night Elves (2.33)
Dodge:
Best - Night Elves (4.50) and Gnomes (3.75)
Worst - Thunder Hammer Dwarves (1.0) and Deadlings (2.00)
Skill:
Best - Black Widows and Pharaohs of Vihktora (3.17)
Worst - Deadlings (1.83) and Samhaino (2.42)
Grit:
Best - Deadlings (5.33) and Thunder Hammer (4.00)
Worst - Night Elves (2.17) and Black Widows (2.58)
========================================
Finally if I sort each team in each attribute and then give the highest score 19 points and the lowest score 1 point ... these are the team totals:
77 Thunder Hammer
77 Timberline Elf
72 Desert Dogs
67 Black Rock
67 Middle Kingdoms
66 Tanezumi
65 Siringit
63 Sarcos
62 Samhaino
62 Black Widows
61 Pharaohs
61 Divine Wind
61 Gnomes
60 Deadlings
60 Razorbacks
59 Night Elves
57 Valkyries
56 Orc
56 Gnolls
==========
Those are stats on looking at the entire 12 players allowed. Since only 6 can take the field at any given time ... these numbers have some definite give and take in them. Hopefully this gives a from the top image of what teams specialize in what.

It's going to be very interesting when games start to be played in large numbers (Vassal or fumbbl like tool) to see just how the win/loss % stack up to these values. Food for thought though it has to be said.

Wow. Tom is a statistician alright.
I think those figures lay it out as well as we have seen it around here. Black Widows and Pharoahs are the easiest to score with and Dwarves and Deadlings cause the most injuries.

Thanks, I think that will help me when I can finally convince my wife that Elfball and a couple of teams is a good x-mass gift for a guy who already has one fantasy football game and 7 or 8 teams for that.
Secondly, just a side note. I like that elf ball looks quicker than that other FF game. I have a friend who takes extremely long turns in it and I value his freindship over a 4minute rule. This looks like it will get us our fix without all the down time for me.
Secondly is there ever going to be an indepth expansion on league set ups or chapionship fluff? Also are there any house rules or ideas on how team development can be sped up, I love the ability to specialize characters with abilities. I do also though like the simplicity and broad nature of team development.

It is faster paced. Moving every other turn keeps the action on. I find that most turns are over in a minute once you get the hang of it all.
Reminds me that I need to post something in that black hole that is the sticky in this section of the forum. There are so many differences between the two and I think that most people don't feel qualified to yack about EB vs FF

I find it hard to talk about Elfball vs. Bl00d Bowl mechanics because they are just apples and oranges. You might as well ask what is the difference between Commands & Colors and Warhammer.
And to be perfectly snotty I'm tired of talking about that other game on this forum.

And to get back to the question, I've found the Desert Dogs taste of sandy sandwiches, the Valks of ice cream, and the deadlings of off meat.

Would that be two scoops of vanilla for the Valkyries?
I'm thinking the Samhaino probably taste like candy corn and pumpkin pie, the gnomes like motor oil... and I don't even want to think about what the gnolls might taste like. *shudder*

Mine taste like lead and plastic with a hint of glue.
No paint yet as I'm not a big fan of condiments.

That's only because the machine didn't know what to make chicken taste like.
