Turns per game? Yet another time question from B.G.Okay, I have an idea to see if we are playing too slow each turn or taking too many turns. I would like it if some other players could count there turns per test. You could use the deck of cards, and by turns I mean 1 turn equals each player getting to move one model. Just take a card each turn or do a tally or something, I don't want to bog down your games, I just want to see if FF has poisoned my Elfball strategies.
I have not yet done this, but it seems like a sensible way to see if our strategy is off, or we just take too long trying to figure out what to do each turn.

Already in the rulebook mate on p.18. It is the first of the optional rules.

yeah I know, I was just wondering if anyone has tried to count the number of turns they play in an average test so I could compare it to mine.

Sorry mate, I just didn't fully read your post fully. Apologies for that. To partially answer your question when I went from 4.9 to 5.1 I have been able to play one test games (admittedly on my own just to get a feel for the rules and the game) in about 1 hour 15 mins though I have no idea of the number of turns. But it is an interesting idea so next time that I get a chance to play I will try to do this and see what the numbers are like.
\Mental note...read posts fully in future

It is alright. Thanks for the input. I will be intrested to hear from others on number of turns vs. time and the like. Just an interesting thing to measure about game speed.

The last game that Silly and I had was about 33 turns apiece for a one test score

That doesn't sound too high, but I think it may be higher than our. I'll count next time.

Well, rob did get whipped much worse than usual :D 33 sounds quite exact though, how did you work it out Rob?

I saved the log, thats why ;)
33 turns apiece took the guts of 2 hours
But thats because the tool is a little slow, I can play faster on the board, and yes... I did have 4 flops :D and a flop on my injury roll on the faceoff after I lost it for the 5th time in a row! :D And then another flop to kill another poor Dwarf :D
That game was a little shorter than usual as well, we normally take about 3 hours :) But thats because SS likes to make me feel more pain :D
Tantor is just sick :)

Just played to one test with one of my newbs. He's played about about 2 games up to now. (one test games)
Black Rock Dwarves vs. Black Widows.
We played 5.1 with Stars counting as 2 successes rather than a reroll (which I love!)
We started at 2:00pm and at 2:43 I scored.
I took 8 turns he took 7.
He removed 3 Black Widows from the pitch, and I shoved one hobimp out of bounds.
If he had known the rules as well as me we could have easily shaved 5-10 minutes off the time.
Granted the turn just before I scored he flopped a tackle with his boar centaur but if he had succeeded I had a back up there to scoop up the ball and score within another 2-3 turns...and if he had successfully done his plan it would have resulted in a score for him within 3 turns as well.
I just can't see 30 turns and 2 hours. Sorry.

We have to get you playing on the vassal client You must be doing something very different to us. I did get very close to scoring significantly earlier in my game against brownrob but winning in 8 turns seems ridiculously quick Whatever the outcome is it should be interesting to play you and see how your games work so differently.
Its worth noting that we were both a bit rusty with the client since we hadnt played for a few weeks... if you are familiar with it then you can definately shave some time off the total.

I can't remember how it went now. I waited too long. I tried to use photoshop to remember but to no avail.
I do remember that I used a midfielder in the face off, won, failed a couple shoves, tossed the ball back and to my right circle where my thrower flopped his catch and the striker next to him grabbed the ball.
He nailed my face off midfielder with bull centaur early on and not too long after a hobimp moved up and nailed my striker with the ball.
My widowmaker advanced from the goal circle to my left side to scare him a bit, and my thrower stood up, grabbed the ball and shoved his hobimp out of bounds.
It's gets cloudy here but at some point I brought in a new striker on the right side, and he took out my widowmaker and brought up his goalie.
I then advanced my hunter and took out his FO dwarf. I know he moved up his other bull centaur and flopped a tackled and went down. I was close enough at this point to toss the ball to my left side midfielder who ran it across the line and chucked it to my hunter.
He tried to tackle the hunter but went down again and I walked it in.
That's about the gist of it.

Another update.
Today we played 3 single test games. He was playing Samhaino (with that damned Horror!! GAWD I hate that troll!) and I was Black Widows...which I love way more than my Deadlings.
We used timers. 60 minutes set on each timer. First game I used about 35 minutes, he used about 40 minutes. (he won, he kicked my ass royally because I underestimated that Horror)
Second game I used about 35 minutes and he used about 45 minutes. This one was brutal! I score with only 3 Widows in play!
Third game I used about 20 minutes and he used about 15 minutes. I disassembled his ass bad! I didn't advance. I took the ball and dared him to come get it and then with my Widowmaker and Hunters I picked him off until he was under manned and then we swarmed forward on him! It was complete pwnage!!
So I don't know how many turns but we basically played a 2-1 game in 3 and a quarter hours.
In my opinion that isn't too long at all. I think the next time we play with the timers we'll drop the time limit to 30 minutes each, just to make the crunch feel more tense.

Played 2 tests today. Black Rock vs. Black Widows. (I love the widows!)
We used timers 30 min ea. per test. I lost 2-0. Tho on the first test we went over by about 5-10 minutes because he was so close to scoring and I couldn't take it away on a time limit technicality.
Next time we will use my cards as a play test.

Played a game against an 11 year old that had never played before.
Game went back and forth ... crossed the center white line 5 times before we finished.
Even with teaching him the rules for his first game took us 1 hour and 22 minutes. And I missed two opportunties to end the game sooner on a failed throw and another on a falled disengage.
Things I did to make the 1st game go faster.
1) Used both the introductory rules.
2) Each team only received 6 players. I found not having the extras for our first game helped attrition speed up the game. At the end ... he had 3 players and I had 4.
Game was Valkyrie vs Desert Dogs. I won with Desert Dogs on a Striker run in after a Midfielder did a 3 hex throw to the empty hex next to the Striker since he was 4 hexes away.
His team: 1 Thrower, 2 Hunters, 1 Striker, 1 Midfielder, 1 Ice Troll
My team: 1 each Dervish, Midfielder, Thrower, Striker and 2 Defenders
The Dervish actually managed to shove the Ice Troll into my goal after he caught the ball to get him ejected from the game (that was fun ... 3 successes needed on 4 dice twice).
===
Anyway I found 2 items that came up during the game that I don't think the rulebook is clear on that I wanted to ask you guys if you agree or disagree that these topics need to be more clear.
1) An opposing player with the ball is pushed into non-scoring goal for that team. What happens to the ball? (I ruled that it was like a player running out of bounds so the ball went to the center hex).
2) If you throw a successful throw to an empty hex ... does the ball stick in that hex or does it bounce once. (I ruled it sticks).
My question to you all would be if my rulings are clear from the current rulebook or if it needs tweaked to make sure that these are clear?

That's how we have played both of those...can't remember if we found them in the rules or not.
At any rate I don't think you need to tweak it. Just add them to a rules FAQ. I believe there's in here somewhere.
