VASSAL ElfBall 5.1 Released!

Just to let you guys know, I updated the mod to 5.1 of the rules

Stuff I added...

- Swinetaur on Razorback roster + new modified
- Added an Eject option to the menu for ease when you push a player on to a white line
- Removed the Get Up and Improved Get Up challenges, and replaced them with a feature that stands the player up, and tells you how many spaces of jog you need to spend, before modifiers (Its just too much work to fully automate this!). Also if you are down, the dazed option is disabled and vice versa, and both options are disabled if the player is not activated or the player is standing!
- Added a button to access the challenge tables from the toolbar menu!

Is the link for the mod!

Please let me know what you think!

Looks good mate but can I make a feature request? Do you know what would make the game about 10x easier to use? Not having to rotate facing gradually. I like how on an active player you only have to press the right button to get the player to move but how easy is it (indeed can it be done?) to change the facing in the same way. So that if you pressed '1' on your keyboard then you are facing NE, '2' is E etc etc. It sounds small but having to change facing gradually is an incredible pain.

Will playtest it all asap though mate. Now I just have to find a way to make the VASSAL application run slightly quicker than glue going uphill.

Also, how about Dbl-click makes a player the active one. Again I hasten to point out that I have no idea how easy any of these suggestions are to implement so feel free to scoff at my imperious demands!
brownrob

Thanks matt!

The facing sounds doable

Ctrl + A will activate the player as it is, I dont think its possible just yet to activate with a double click, Ill have a look though!
SillySod

My tip there is to learn the hotkeys. Pretty mu7ch all of the ingame actions have hotkeys but you only really need to know a few and it will speed up your game no end, including facing. My suggested three to learn:

- change facing = ctrl + f
- prone/dazed/standing toggle = crtl + z
- take away jog (add jog) = ctrl + j (ctrl + shift + j)

You might not need the toggle down/standing or the jog toggle so much now that brownrob has added in the new features but changing the facing is ALOT faster if you use the hotkey.
mattwakeman

Using the hotkeys are fine in most cases because they only have to be chosen once but facing is not one of them. When you are setting up for a test it can be a real pain to have to keep clicking three times on players before you can get to the action. And thanks Rob, anything you can do to the tool is great.
SillySod

With facing you just need to have the player selected, pressing the hotkeys wont unselect them so you can change the facing correctly almost imediately. I suspect an alternative method would be easy mto add in though I wouldnt use it myself.
mattwakeman

Yes but what I am saying is that I would like the ability to be able to change a players facing in any direction with just one button press rather than having to rotate one hex at a time.

RAWRR! We had two concurrent games running and brownrob gets trounced while teaching another new recruit

Well, I had a look at the game Dan-Sod and my impression is that in Elfball you don't need to move all players... in fact they didnĄt move two of them, and one of them has been shoved by Sod out of the pitch.

Depends on the action of the game.  You may not need to move all the players to win.   I don't actually see this as a problem in terms of game enjoyment.

Is the revised Throw challenge in this version Rob?

Well Tom I couldnt fully automate the challenges, so its not JavaBB automated, but its simple enough to work out, and i added in all the updated charts to the tool anyway, I think its possible, but its going to take a LOT of hours to get it like that, and they are hours I cant really committ just now

So why don't play with 4 players instead of 6 if you don't have to move them all?
SillySod

That particular game was quite heavy on a particular area because I couldnt get the punishing or crippling hit I needed and the wretched hunter kept standing back up to threaten my ball carrier. As the game goes on as well you'll find that it swings to both sides of the board so pretty much all the 6 players end up being used unless one side gets a goal quickly.

A good reason for having 6 players is just to threaten and control space. If his non moving players werent ther I'd have switched sides and scored more easily. Likewise if I'd found a spare move I'd have shifted my 6th player up to threaten that side of the board.

I've had games of Chess I've won without moving all my pieces... did that mean that all future games should be played without those pieces?

I've had drives in B.lood B.owl where I've never activated certain players on my team ... does that mean all future games should be played with less than 11?

Just trying to put this in perspective.

Shame I haven't got the time to play a complete match - I really need to start playing Elfball (the guy at club that's brought/buying a set isn't available on games night atm.

Is it possible to use the VASSAL tool to Play By eMail?
brownrob

Yes Simon, but I dont think its as slick for email as PBEMBB
Darkson

That's not a problem - it's the time that's the issue.

Right, once I've got the PC repaired, I'll look into this.

Once you do mate. Give me a mail.

pbem is going to be best for me.

I'll see if I can get it downloaded and all that soon.

Another feature request please

Since the new rules include a different face off challenge can we have a button somewhere which will either do two 6 die challenge rolls one after the other or probably easier for you just have a button to roll a six die challenge without having to click on a player. At the moment the face off challenge on a player uses their Might or in order to have to make the 6 die roll you have to make a special injury challenge which ends up leaving an injury marker on the player!

As ever, thanks for the work that you are doing here mate, it is much appreciated.
SillySod

If you need to do any rolls manually then at the top of the dice window there is a button saying "roll # of dice". Click this and you can manually set any number of dice for a challenge.
mattwakeman

Ooops, forgot that one was there Can forget that feature request then!

Hi Matt!

Ive coded in the first request you made, Ive assigned them to the following shortcuts (I hope they are OK for you!)
ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+W for setting facing to W
Same for the rest of the letters.

Now I can change this to numbers but its maybe harder to remember, I would change them to something like SHIFT+W but but simpler hotkeys like that  have been used already and is an enormous hassle to go back and change it, as something else breaks!

I still need to look at the doubleclick thing you requested, I may have to learn Java to import a class to do it though!!!

Also, a clever ElfBaller suggested that I add in sounds for actions etc, now if anyone has any short .wav sounds I can use for running, throwing, catching, tackling etc, then Id be very happy to get hold of them!!!

Ill upload the updated mod once I manage to get a few sounds in!
Redspade

If you change the shortcut to numbers couldn't you use the same numbers for facing that the boardgame uses for ball bouncing, easier to remember that way.
mattwakeman

Thanks very much for doing this Rob but I have to say that I really agree with this:

As there is the dodge table on there already then I think that numbers really are the way to go rather than a four key combination. And maybe at some point once the tool has been tested and really played with then it may be the time to revisit it and see about the key configuration as a whole. I would be really interested in seeing after people have played some games which key combinations should be the easiest / shortest as they are the ones most used.

If we do this (and by 'we' I don't mean to include myself there!) then moving and facing will, I am sure, prove to be the single most used keys and thus from a design and user perspective should be the most logical for the coaches to use. Totally up to you though mate as I really appreciate the time that you have spent / will spend on the tool.

You and GG definitely deserve a
