Warmachine - how good is it?

Does anyone here play Warmacine?

I know thadrin does, but I was wondering how it plays, compared to say 40k (any edition)? My boy looks like he might be getting the wargaming bug, and if I can help it, I'd rather he didn't get into 40k in a big way, if only so I don't have to start playing it again, so I'd like to find an alternative. It's got to be a sci-fi/fantasy game though, so Flames of War won't cut it.

Cheers all.

I play. Not much...but i play once a month or so.

The concept is really brilliant.

First: you can play from small bands (nearly mordheim but in open field) to large armys....and always is enjoyable.

So...you get your faction boxset...and start playing. Then...you just need to attach units, more "captains", and more warjacks (war machines :p)

Then...the rules are so simple...and that allows to cover all the suspects. The important part are not the rules but a good tactical plan.

The background is more fantasy than 40k. Its based on Iron Kingdoms. They call steam-punk. Steam based machinery, magic and so.

Not much more to say :p

It should be mentioned that Warmachine miniatures are not any cheaper than 40k ones. I've seen people spend frightening amounts of money on warmachine.

It's a great game. Far more involved than 40k.

It took us a while to really get the hang of it, but I would certainly suggest you try out some box set starter games (either Warmachine or Hordes, there are entirely compatible). Just don't make the mistake of expanding too quickly otherwise the games will get bogged down and take forever as you try to make sense of (and keep track of) all the different special rules for both sides! Start at 350pts, then very slowly expand up to 500pts. It'll also make the whole process slightly less painful on the bank balance...

It (and Hordes) are very good imo.

I got my hands on some Hordes, but I never use it. Not because it's not good, but because I don't have the time or patience to involve myself in tabletop gaming (Note: A certain FF game I play falls into the board game category not TTWG.)

I keep meaning to ebay the book and minis. But I might keep the Dire Troll Marauder as it is rather good.

If you're going to get into it, buy boxes now. PP are raising prices.

Warmachine costs less than Grandma Wendy insofar as you need less figures to make your army.

I come under the "scary amounts of stuff" category.

Warmachine is faster, more vicious and in general better than warhammer. Couple of weekends ago we played afour game tourney in about 9 hours. Great fun.

Lets put it this way...how many games are still fun even though you're getting your arse kicked into the middle of next week.
