I have been thinking about this project on and off for a while now but have had other stuff to finish. I was thinking of 8 individual A3 sized boards that you could use to make a combination of board set ups. Here are 8 rough board images. They are actually to scale, the number of suares is all you can fit on an A3 sheet:
(Grey - Floor, White - Border, Blue - connecting passage, Thick line - wall)
End zone tiles
Depending what size game you want decides how many tiles you use. I have put together som sample layouts:
Now I have not played Dungeonbowl for a long time, would these boards work, is there too much/little space? Any criticism is welcome if I am to move this project forward in any way.

Just to make it clear, this is just a sketchpad version. I want to map a layout before I start work on a full graphics funky looking board. I don't want to spend ages doing up a nice but badly-laid-out board. I just want critique on the layout at this stage. _________________ If you give a monkey alcohol it will become a fearsome martial artist.

Looks pretty cool!
I'd consider printing really rough versions and play a couple of games before refining further
In my limited experience, if you get a couple of choking points in a dungeon set up, it can be difficult for either team to score. |

Here is a very rough version of 1 tile. Not happy with the connecting passages. Put the torch and lighting in to see how it looked. I might do them all up like this for playtesting.
Any thoughts?

Not liking the light from the torch...
but that might just be me that are hurt from my job as a 3d-artist...
Other than that it looks good.
Could be cool with some walls that showed in perspective. Ever thought of building it in 3d and render the pictures? |

Did some quick testings... i know that you see through the backsides of the walls and that there is no bump-mapping and that the lightning is to sharp.
But i think it looks like if i put some time with it, it could be made goodlooking.

That looks brilliant, I have only basic photoshop skills. What software do you use to create that? _________________ If you give a monkey alcohol it will become a fearsome martial artist.

That is done in 3ds Max.
Actually, i am not totally satisfied with the thing. The walls hide some of the squares on the floor. Think it might be a better thing to do just rooms and corridors like in some Dungeon based boardgames.
Problems would be with the doors if you wanted them to be modular... I wanted to have light cast through archways.
here is another test that might not look as good, but would be better to play on...

It is about 20 lightsources in there simulating torch-lights... they are throwing shadows all over the place. :P
But i have to play with it some more to get the right lightning for it. Also got some ideas for the doors and what to do about the backside of the walls... |

Is it quite easy to use 3ds Max to get this effect, or have you just had alot of practice? _________________ If you give a monkey alcohol it will become a fearsome martial artist.

Here are the other provisional tiles. Next endzones and teleports.

If you never used max, it isn't easy. I work as a 3d-modeller and max is my main tool. Not done much lightning and rendering though, so that part took me the longest time of this.
When i get some free time i will experiment some more. those lava things looks like they could throw some cool lightning... |
