Hi all.

According to the 5.1 rulebook, you can make a replacement if you have less than 6 players on the field.  Are you also allowed to make substitutions: taking one player off the field to bring in another?

I did a search for this topic but all the threads it brought up were from '07 which I thought probably weren't valid anymore.

Thanks

jolt

I think the only way to do that would be to run a player off the field and then on your next turn bring a new one on. The player running off would be out for the rest of the test tho.

IMO it wouldn't be a good idea, better to play with what you have than waste two turns getting the right player on. Or better yet, instead of running a player out of bounds, send him on a kamikaze tackle against the opponent's monsters.

But if you mean, take a player off a hex and place a player from the bench in his former hex. Nope, against the rules.

Replacement players can only come into these hexes, and can make no other actions.

Just to clarify:

The six players you intially set up on the field are the ones you must continue to use unless one is injured, correct?

If a game is being played to more than one score, can you substitue players at each new setup?

If for any reason you are left with less than 6 players on the pitch you may bring in a new player.

At each set up, you may choose any of the players (who are not prevented from playing by injury or ejection) on your roster to be one of the six set on pitch.

Yes MJ is correct.

And like he said "If for any reason you are left with less than 6 players" you can replace one. Meaning that if for some reason you felt you needed a replacement but had 6 players, you could run one out of bounds voluntarily, but you couldn't replace him until your next turn.

Hope I'm not confusing the issue. I just wanted to illustrate that the rules allow sort of loophole  for you to swap a player.

I prefer to dangle my player dangerously close to the shove out line and have my opponent spend his/her turn to shove me off so that I can bring on the replacement right away. :)

Call it a shift change if you will. But that is one way to get a player in the back field quick. Or bring in a positional that had to sit the start of the drive out due to being in the recovery box.

Not at all, thanks for the replies everyone.

Due to lack of interest in the game in my area, the only time I get to play is when I road trip to visit friends.  Last time I got to play a game there weren't even official rules for replacements so I wanted to make sure my understanding was down pat.

I never thought about deliberately running a player off the field.  Though I suppose if I saw an Ogress bearing down on me screaming, "Want hug 'um now!" I'd dive off the pitch too.
