Just thought I would kick off a little discussion  for the minis for the game

One thing that popped into my head would be to include some of the magnets and a detachable basketball so that the player in possession could attach the ball to one of the minis hands to show he has the ball to avoid having several players with presculpted balls on the figs all on the pitch, like thrower minis of other games etc

(Please, stop thinking about rude comments about balls!)

I havent read the rulesbut assuming thr ball can go loose, then it can simply be detached

Good idea or not?

Good idea Rob ... way to difficult to cast and sell.

Most of the figures we produce for this game will be holding a basketball.

Just like I don't see players get confused that a Thrower doesn't really have the football ... I'm sure players will be able to handle the ball token that will sit on the base of the player with the ball.

Would you idea be very cool ... oh yes.   Just no practical way to apply it.

No probem Tom

I guess leading on from that, and I am just entertaining myself here, is that (having still not read the rules) you could have a few different types of ball you could play with. Im guessing that you can hurt the other team, maybe having a regular ball you can hurl it at a player for a chance to hurt them, and the type of ball could affect the chances of hurting the player

Brown Ball: Normal Bounce and Normal material (Standard)
Red Ball: Hard bounce and extra hard material (Hard to control but better chance of hurting opponent)
Blue Ball: Uneven bounce and softer material (softer ball that doesnt bouce that well)

Which would be good as house rules, if the ball ever went out of play, the team to start could decide on a ball to use to restart the play etc

Please bear in mind I havent read the rules so I could be talking tosh

If I buy the game I could end up filing off the balls and attaching other balls like these if available with magnets

G'day brownrob,

Nuthin' But Net has the optional rule of deliberately injuring players by contact. You can also become injured by rolling badly when moving through an opponent, getting blocked and a couple of others.

You can't injure someone by throwing a ball at them (chances are they'd catch it and put a shot up!)

It also does away with worrying about bouncing the ball. This is automatically assumed to keep gameplay streamlined. You can lose the ball, via steals or bad ball handling, but you don't have to keep track of bouncing the ball.

Interesting idea with the different ball types, but I don't think that they would have much effect on the rules as they stand.

Certainly if you wanted to try something like this as a set of house rules, by all means, go for it.
I would suggest that:
Brown ball - no difference
Red Ball - catching is at -1 to Ball Handling skill, rebounds at double the distance
Blue Ball - catching is at +1 to Ball Handling, rebounds and scatters a max of 2 hexes.

Cheers,
Ben.

should be pretty easy idea to implement yourself.  Just get some steel shot (just like Impact uses in their Elfballs) and procreate a basketball around it.

Then you have a basketball that will stick any where you put a magnet...

or just paint a ball bearing.

if the figs were sculpted with one flat open hand, then it would be easy enough to drill in and place a small magnet.

Sorry to dredge back up, it was more for aesthetic reasons that I thought this was a good idea.

In my minds eye its like if you had a guy with a gun in another game, but instead of the gun he was carrying, he actually had a sword!

I know Im being very petty, I know its hard to sculpt etc but i thought it would look awesome and be a good selling point to the game, as a more visual movement of the ball. Its a moot point but Im going to entertain myself anyway :) I thought it would be cool if the minis were in an action pose with 2 open hands, plus the magnets loose that the buyer could drill in if he or she so wished, then use the ball with shot in it to use as a detachable ball. If they felt they werent that confident in drilling etc, then Impact could supply a set of 5 or so balls that they could buy and then glue to their mini!

I can have a go at converting it but its not my forte :)

Rob,  I really like your idea as well.  And I really hope that when these minis get commisioned, there is a "no ball" option for the hands.  In FF and even elfball, the number of mini's with ball are greatly outnumbered by mini's with out the ball.  In a game such as this, with as I understand it, 3 minis on the board (per team), I really think 3 minis with the ball won't "look" as good or even "right".

I would like to suggest that Nuthin But Net minis have a hand sprue without the ball.  And that the hand be as thick as your smallest magnet.  That way it covers all 3 types of customer preferences.

1.  The ball is there for people who like/want the ball or don't want to model.
2.  The hands are there for people who don't like the ball look.
3.  A hand thick enough to add a magnet, satisfies the modelers/converters that would like to push their mini's a little farther and go the removable ball.

You guys did hand options with the annubis blitzer, and it looked great.  I hope that same option is considered with the nothing but net players.

As a very last resort, please make the ball easily removed/cut off from the mini. no torso/ball combos.

I can't wait for this game and will be buying it at Gencon.

Guys ... most basketball poses look pretty dumb without a ball in the hands of the player.

I get what you are saying ... but we already worked with a sketch artist and found it pretty clear that without the ball the figures in many cases just looked pretty dumb.

That's why we are currently looking at most of them having balls.

Also Ted ... the unfortunate reality of our business is that multiple part figures don't sell as well as one part figures.

If multi did sell as well ... we could pursue what you are discussing.

What we can do is if the Nuthin' But Net sales are good.  We can have the sculptor make a seperate hand sprue that could be used to convert the figures yourself.
